The refurb is $329 too. It's a great little laptop if you can get past that it's not a name brand with little technical support available.

Where do you find the refurb?

Search "Gateway 16GB 512GB" and you'll see it. It's called restored, but I assume that's the same as a refurb.

Same question - seems really cheap given the specs. What is the catch? What am I missing?

I got one of these laptops, refurbished, from Walmart a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was okay when I tried it. I ran 2 benchmark applications and the scores were lower than indicated in most websites, but I was okay with it because I am not a gamer and the computer seemed to be working okay for the first 2 or 3 days. On the 4th day it could not boot. It displayed the Gateway logo and that was it. I could not get into the BIOS or do anything else. I contacted Gateway support by phone and after following very basic troubleshooting I was promptly instructed to take the issue to Walmart and attempt to get a replacement (new one). I am mentioning all this for reference. Gateway's support website has a few comments with stories somewhat similar to mine.
On the plus side, the laptop feels sturdy enough to make you think it is not that cheap. The keyboard felt okay too. The screen was perfectly bright for indoor use (I did not try it outside). The specs were more than enough for most common tasks. It has a fingerprint reader that worked consistently.
On the not so nice side I have read, here in SD, that overtime the housing starts getting loose. As mentioned before, the processor seems to run a little bit underpowered, but I do not know if that was part of the reasons why it was sold as refurbished in the first place.
I think it can end up being a decent laptop if one is lucky enough to get a working one, especially if a decent amount of care is given. It is definitely not high end or a gaming laptop.
Best of luck should you decide to get one of these.

Man these specs look pretty good given the price. I would be tempted if I didn't pull the trigger on the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 for $345 a few days ago. That one probably has a better premium build to this but for these specs, I'm a bit conflicted. Ram, storage are doubled here, looks to be a higher iris xe graphics, better screen. Hmm

This has been discussed at length in another thread. They've been in and out of stock for months now at various prices. I got mine for $349.99 a few weeks ago. It's a good machine for the price, but surprisingly heavy. Build quality is meh, but what do you expect for $350.

The "refurbs" for $329 appear to just be customer returns. Several people, including myself, have had bad luck with these. Mine died after a couple of rounds of Memtest 86 and back it went. For the small price difference I'd advise avoiding these and getting a new one.

Maybe the 14.1" is good? I have the 15.6" Gateway and it's horrible. I would not recommend buying this. Spend more for a better quality laptop.
  • Too much flex; feels cheap.
  • Keyboard is terrible.
  • Touchpad doesn't always register keytaps. It's not consistent. Frustrating to tap touchpad and not have it register your input.
  • Screen appears washed out and not very bright.
  • The "tuned by THX" audio is a joke. Worst speakers I have used on any device.. and I include my Nintendo DS in that group.
  • Way too heavy.

Avoid! You have been warned. Smilie

Did you return and get the GW? I did the same… I'm worried I will miss the backlit keyboard… but other than that it seems like a no brained to return the dell

Oh wow, I didn't realize this gateway didn't have a backlit keyboard, thanks for pointing that out. That's a deal breaker for me so I'm keeping the dell instead. I can spend ~$100 or so and upgrade both the RAM and storage on there. I've had enough laptops without backlit keyboards to know that I definitely need that feature moving forward.

Been using this since December. Its a very capable device, but the keyboard isnt the best and isnt backlit, the trackpad skips at times, and the webcam is subpar.

All forgivable for this price point, but definitely not the same as using a XPS.

The BIOS is unlocked. You can set whatever wattages you'd like in there, including for the GPU.
