Same question - seems really cheap given the specs. What is the catch? What am I missing?

On the plus side, the laptop feels sturdy enough to make you think it is not that cheap. The keyboard felt okay too. The screen was perfectly bright for indoor use (I did not try it outside). The specs were more than enough for most common tasks. It has a fingerprint reader that worked consistently.
On the not so nice side I have read, here in SD, that overtime the housing starts getting loose. As mentioned before, the processor seems to run a little bit underpowered, but I do not know if that was part of the reasons why it was sold as refurbished in the first place.
I think it can end up being a decent laptop if one is lucky enough to get a working one, especially if a decent amount of care is given. It is definitely not high end or a gaming laptop.
Best of luck should you decide to get one of these.

The "refurbs" for $329 appear to just be customer returns. Several people, including myself, have had bad luck with these. Mine died after a couple of rounds of Memtest 86 and back it went. For the small price difference I'd advise avoiding these and getting a new one.
Avoid! You have been warned.
Did you return and get the GW? I did the same… I'm worried I will miss the backlit keyboard… but other than that it seems like a no brained to return the dell
Oh wow, I didn't realize this gateway didn't have a backlit keyboard, thanks for pointing that out. That's a deal breaker for me so I'm keeping the dell instead. I can spend ~$100 or so and upgrade both the RAM and storage on there. I've had enough laptops without backlit keyboards to know that I definitely need that feature moving forward.
All forgivable for this price point, but definitely not the same as using a XPS.
