FWIW, if you are looking for this all in one, Amazon also appears to have the 50th Anniversary Edition on sale for $46 (from $99). Personally I have been waiting for this version to go on sale for a long time now, and was glad I checked both. Hope this helps someone else!

Was excited, but reviews point out that illustrations are few and far between, and quality of print/paper/etc is poor. As always take with a grain of salt, but it turned me off ;/.

I'll send you further down the rabbit hole.

Here are some of the good LOTR versions, in no particular order:

1. *One volume Alan Lee illustrated edition.*
*ISBN:* 9780007525546
*Price:* $75
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWi-4o5DSZ4
Illustrated by Alan Lee, decent binding, newer printings of this use the corrected text.

2. *Three volume 60th anniversary edition*
*ISBN:* 9780007581146
*Price:* $100 box set
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=259vD4efEQs
These use the corrected text, and have the closest covers to Tolkien's design. They also have a bunch of other stuff as he wanted it, like red ring text and book of mazarbul facsimiles. If you get the box set you'll also get the reader's companion.

3. *One volume "deluxe edition"*
*ISBN:* 9780007182367
*Price:* $100
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxdDRo1XnHY
Nice binding, corrected text, all the "Tolkien's intent" stuff as previous (except the covers).

4. *One volume 50th anniversary edition*
*ISBN:* 0618517650
*Price:* $60
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zaBk9nRLow
Binding arguably better than previous (it's pretty subjective), but none of the "tolkien's intent" stuff. Corrected text.

5. *One volume sofcover deluxe edition.*
*ISBN:* 9780544273443
*Price:* $25
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS7L1xhTW4Y
Nice binding for a softcover. Corrected text.

6. *The Folio Society three volume edition*
*Price:* $150
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W89u0uFaWFQ
Really nice binding, illustrated by the Queen of Denmark.

There's a really gorgeous edition with Alan Lee art that recently came out. I've been watching it like a hawk for the price to drop a bit more.

That's the one to get. Tolkien was a great author but I think a fear of badmouthing a genius like him has bought him a lot of free passes/caused a lot of people to blindly accept his mediocre drawing/painting abilities.

Going down this gollum hole,

This looks like one link for the Lee Illustrated box set (~$111) plus scroll for adding The Great Tales box set for ~$150.

It looks like others have volunteered a few options already so I will expand with some thoughts of my own. Apart from getting into first editions which is not the intent of my post, here are a couple nicer editions that are not too hard to get with a little cash. Also if you are interested Amazon currently has a good price on the history of middle earth set. Not as high quality, but a solid set for a lower price: https://a.co/45GjcVZ

Readily available:

Preferred: https://www.eastonpress.com/all-c...-0193.html

Alternate: https://www.juniperbooks.com/prod...mplete-set

The Lord of the Rings: Special Edition https://a.co/9koQ1Tp

Available via resellers and book marketplaces:

https://tolkienlibrary.com/pcollier/jc00001.htm [^^bought this myself in early 2000s, but available as individual books on Biblio and other sites]

https://www.foliosociety.com/usa/...ition.html

Avoid the millennium edition. It looks ok in photos but is small and inferior quality.

Which is the best illustrated version? The $110 978-0008376109 and the $75 9780618260584 (and one volume as $75 9780007525546)?

Also, does the deal posted in OP include much of Tolkien's intent?

I'm curious what the use case is for the single volume versions. They'd be difficult to read comfortably. Do some people feel that they look nicer on a shelf than a three volume version?

I'm sorry, but I'm a little confused. On your link, are you referring to the 50th Anniv One Volume Ed? The hardcover is $26.49. Is that different from 49 that you're saying? Thanks!

Yes, the Alan Lee one is considered the best.

In terms of Tolkien's intent, the deal posted in OP has all of it:
- it's printed in two colors, allowing the ring inscription to be in red as Tolkien intended
- it has Tolkien's cover designs before each volume
- the book of mazarbul pages are included as Tolkien wanted

It is to be expected. There are much higher quality editions to be had (I can provide links if needed) at significantly higher price points, these are basically the mass market paperback deluxe editions. I wouldn't consider myself a collector, just a hobbyist, but I have a small library of Tolkien's works valued in the thousands (not tens of thousands, though I know those who do).
Links Needed Big Grin

#Edit: nvm, I see page 2.
