My RAM issue seems to be resolved by swapping out the sticks from one device to the other. I didn't bother re-testing the original PC / RAM combo after the individual sticks tested out OK, since that combo works fine in the other unit. My son was just playing Roblox for an hour this afternoon on the unit with the formerly troublesome RAM, so I guess we are OK there.

I had taken a look at the WIFI adapter under Device Manager, and did not see any warnings on either unit. On both units, right after installing the extra 8gb RAM I immediately did the free Windows 11 upgrade plus any subsequent updates that were available. I am definitely running Windows 11 on both.

I had not heard of chromeosflex before, but you have me interested now that I am dipping my feet back into tinkering with PC's after taking a break for a good 20 years or so. If it is not too involved, I might quickly try installing that onto a USB drive and see if the WIFI works the same as under Windows on these PC's. The funny thing is that I am not really planning to use these boxes with WIFI much, however I figure now is my chance to get it fixed before the warranty/return period ends and I lose my options. I guess having the option for WIFI might come in handy if I need a PC running in a spot where I haven't run ethernet cable.
It seems you don't have ram or wi-fi issue...

Are you transcoding 4k using this? What bitrate (original > final)?

I did some quick testing and 4K ~14mbps > 1080 8mbps worked, it hiccups a bit in begining but plays fine. x264 works without problems. All my devices support x265, so no issue and I don't stream away from home.

no it doesn't. I checked it after your post. It does what appears to be slot for card reader, but it is blocked with rubber. I tried to insert SD card in it. No go.

I have a number of microSD cards I put in device, up to 500gb, and that works in usb3 slot, also I have adaptors where usb3 stick has SD slot, and micro slot, plus 3 other usb 3 ports. There are 2 usb3 ports on front of PC. And 4 usb 2 ports on back.
Any USB-C ? Sorry if I missed it .

sounds good.
We are just trying to find out if chromeosflex has drivers that work during wifi. If they do, and it's good speed, the wifi adapter should be good and it could be driver issue.

Now if nothing let's the wifi work on the motherboard, then yeah, return it. I don't know if Acer CARE app can do any upgrades on your PC. Did you get a Acer firmware bios update? Check optional updates in windows 11 to, to see if any optional drive or firmware is available to you. It could be outdated bios or something else. At least trouble shoot it before sending it in, ... just so you have experience at trouble-shooting it. Maybe someone else has a suggestion too.

I was unable to scrape up a large enough flash drive to try booting into chromeosflex. I did download & update the Atheros wireless LAN driver (v12.0.0.1159) from the Acer website, however that did not make any WIFI download speed difference. The Acer website does show a BIOS update (dated 2/14/19), but I am hesitant to mess with that. I have already installed the latest Win 11 updates including optional ones.

Great video.
For diagnostics, barebones boot would have the m.2 drive, optical drive unplugged and a single stick of ram. SATA ports are definitely routed through chipset (per that video), and so a theoretical fix would be running a SATA SSD with the video card, if needed.
I watched the video too and decided to give it another shot. I put the Acer motherboard in the ATX mid tower case and removed everything except for one stick of ram, the power brick and the power switch. I again tried GT 1030, RX 550, and Radeon HD 5450. None of them use external power and the 5450 is PCIE 2.0. Once again I didn't get any video output. My monitor stayed asleep until I took the card out and used onboard hdmi. I'm not sure if an externally powered GPU would work or not as I don't have one but best of luck to you on it.

UPDATE...someone got a gpu to work. see post 385 from @musashi_1707 https://slickdeals.net/f/15916111-acer-aspire-xc-desktop-refurb-celeron-j4125-4gb-ram-256gb-ssd-88?p=156469333#post156469333

Hmm.. 5450 is a 19w TDP unit.. Any jumpers to be seen near bios battery? I personally might remove the battery, try to locate a jumper with two options nearby. That is definitely interesting. So there's no way to hook it up to a regular PSU easily huh?
Thanks for all the info..

There is a jumper named "CMOS 1" nearby the battery to clear the stored settings in CMOS

Linux isn't always plug-n-play so I would try using Windows 10 to see if the graphic card is listed in device manager while using the motherboard HDMI output. It's possible to use the IGP output and have the GPU do the rendering in Windows. Might also be worth updating the BIOS if you don't have the latest version to see if that changes the BIOS selection. Here's the Acer Aspire XC-830 support page [acer.com] which has the BIOS updates.

that is the right Atheros driver, same as mine.
my Acer bios firmware is ACER System Firmware R02-A1

I guess the Atheros wifi is defective on both of your PC's, when Looking at the wifi card in your pc, is the wire coming out of it, free and attached to the wifi card. There are 2 wires coming out of the small Atheros wifi card, a black wire and a white wire, they are your antennas for the card , are they attached to the Atheros card, and do the wires look good, not pinched or anything. How is your bluetooth. Does it work when you use bluetooth device/speakers/etc. Did you install a SSD card in your device or adjust the wires , the white one could go into the metal cage , with many other wires?

Let us know how everything goes with ACER, when you get your devices back.

Both Acer units have the same black and white wire setup. The thin black wire runs from a black rectangular (antenna?) at the rear of the case to what appears to be the WIFI card. The white wire runs to the front of the PC case under the drive bay area. Both connections to the WIFI card are in securely, and I have been careful not to tamper with them. I haven't made any mods or installed anything into either box, aside from the RAM sticks. The PC's bluetooth shows as being enabled in Windows, although I haven't tried syncing any devices to it as of yet.

I'm waiting for Acer to send me the prepaid labels hopefully today, at which point I'll box both units up and send them back. I'm tentatively planning to 'permanently delete' personal files I had copied and my Google sign-in, as well as pull my extra RAM sticks out before sending the units back. Hopefully this is sufficient to safeguard my data. I'm hesitant to re-format the hard drive and mess up the Windows installation.

sounds good. I guess you could do a "reset" on the PC's and pick option to not save any files or apps that you put on. That will return PC to factory conditions. Don't do the cloud install , but install from PC. I guess after reset, test out the wifi again, to see if it works. Smilie

I don't think it is wi-fi card issue, if your two PCs are experiencing the same issue, that must be your router problem which it doesn't support 80mhz/160mhz bandwidth or something else...
My 88 Celeron PC's wi-fi working perfectly for the speed around 200mpbs
