This 88 dollar PC is not a powerful PC. That is correct. I'm not being duped into thinking this is a POWERFUL PC!
This is a laptop PC who's motherboard has been placed in a tiny tower case and can run windows 10/11, and you can add more ram, and comes with NVMe, with external power supply that laptop's use! So very, very low power 24/7 machine 6 watts idle.
It has bluetooth/wifi,ethernet port, 4 usb 2 ports, 2 usb 3 ports. 2 year warranty, intel 600 internal graphics, hdmi and vga port,

You know that Walmart currently is selling this at 299 dollars with good user review average.

I object to the word "duped" in your post. There are 2-3 threads on this device on slickdeals , with things people are doing with it.

Like the Raspberry Pi, it is hobby device, and cheaper than Pi,( if you were to buy Pi plus all the extra's you need to buy to complete Pi package).

Hopefully, people read YOUR post, and read posts from others that discuss the positive aspect of this device, so they know what they are buying and not buying. Alert heard, sir. . Your mission is accomplished. Torpedoes away. Next target!

For those of you wanting to use this thing as a NAS, you're looking at three issues:

Where to mount the disks? As previously mentioned, there's space for a 3.5" disk and a 2.5" disk if you removed the optical drive. Alternatively, you could remove the entire cage and replace it with something that'd accept two 3.5" disks [amazon.com] (I haven't actually tried it because I haven't received the computer yet, but it should work). Similarly, it should not be too difficult to put four 2.5" disks in the case. Use a cage if you want to be fancy. Velcro or duct tape if you just don't gaf. Or get a bigger case, but then you'd lose the cute little form factor.

Where to get the power? Y-splitters. Just don't overload the power supply.

Where to connect the data cables? Ah, now this is the fun part. See previous post regarding the limitations of the PCIe bus. If the goal is to install as many disks as possible, one way would be to put SATA controllers in the ×16, ×4, and ×2 slots. Yes, the M-keyed M.2 slot and even the E-keyed M.2 slot could probably be used for PCIe modules, including SATA controllers and Ethernet controllers.

Each lane of PCIe 2.0 provides 500 MB/s of bandwidth, just barely sufficient for SATA III's 600 MB/s. This is obviously not a problem for HDD, but could limit SSD performance. You might want to be... creative... with port selection, if you plan to use SSDs and HDDs together. For example, if you put a 2-port SATA controller in the ×2 slot, you might want to pair an SSD with a HDD on that same controller to optimize bandwidth usage.

Also remember the limitations of the DMI link. If you're using this machine as a NAS, your disks might be sharing PCIe bandwidth with your NIC. You could potentially install many disks and a lot of other stuff, but they'd compete for bandwidth. Proceed with caution.

Yes, the case is only for low profile PCIe.
However you can migrate system to you own standard ITX , mini ITX, ATX case (some youtube video posted by SDers in the thread)

..

So the graphics card is in PCIE x2 mode at the moment. I will at some point experiment with removal of the optical drive and possibly the wireless/bluetooth chip, to see if I can get it to run in x4 mode. This card is capable of x8 I believe.

My performance in Battlefield 1 is about 20fps on low settings at 1440x900 res, it's not tearing and stuttering and is actually quite playable.. That's the most gpu intensive game I have installed. CS GO works and looks great at this resolution. At some point I will test the HDMI connection and 1080p.

This card (GT 730 2gb gddr5) appears to be capable of a significant overclock, especially when voltages are raised (as much as 40%). The 90W power brick I'm using DID heat up quite a bit after a long gaming session. I'll be testing the power draw sometime soon to ensure long term stability, but I did not notice any effects in game. My guess is it was pulling 70-80 watts during full load.

I think my matching ram is in dual channel, but CPU-Z is giving me a greyed out box for most all the ram info, including channel #. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to see if the system is running in dual channel, other than CPU-Z? Thanks.

Ps:
Oh and btw.. I did notice some issues with the wireless connection (dropping connection) .. Is the included wireless chip the achilles heel of this unit?

I really want to use this for 2 drive NAS. I read that it fits a 2.5 and a 3.5 but not two 3.5. I am wondering if anyone successfully hacked it to fit two 3.5 yet? How? Thanks!

it has enough space, the existing bracket is for 1x2.5 + 1x3.5 setup. Or you can remove the exist CD/HDD bracket , you can easily stack 4x 3.5 HDDs on case flat down or make your customized build HD bracket

Yup, it's low profile. And it does look ridiculously big. You could put it in a smaller case, of course, but the size of the low-profile PCIe limits how thin you could make it. The trick to get it even thinner is to use a riser and orient the NIC sideways (parallel to the MB), thin client style.

Did someone install an extra fan? Any suggestions for a good location to install a fan inside the case for better air flow for HDD?

Pulled the trigger on it. If its big oh well Ill make it work, a good small itx case would probably cost near what the PC itself does.
Anyone know the max speed RAM this will take (assuming i remove the 4GB stick)? And its SODIMM right? Going to up it to 16.

Inquiring minds want to know. Is there something intrinsically wrong with the configuration, was your item defective, or was it just not a good fit for your application? This would help other prospective buyers choose wisely.

I'll start with one potential reason for avoiding Acer: shoddy refurb job. Just look at how this IO shield was mashed into the case. Horrifying. The damage was relatively minor and I was able to fix it acceptably, but it does raise the question of what else did they screw up? Purchase only if you're able to inspect and test it carefully within the 30 day return window. You are the quality control.

But hey, you might win the lottery and get an i3 box for $88 Wink

There is one free SATA power connector and one free sata port on the MB to attach a sata data cable. There is also space on the cage above the optical drive to screw in a drive. All you need is a spare drive and a SATA data cable and you're all set.
maybe it's an obvious question, but i dont see where is the SATA power cable when i open mine, is it behind the DVD mount?

I added a 8gb ram and it works perfectly with total of 12gb now.

Now trying to figure out how to add hard drive and wondering if i should use this box to play with proxmox for server stuff or just use Win10 with some retro gaming.Applause

Intel says the J4125 supports DDR4/LPDDR4 up to 2400 MT/s. Not sure if the motherboard has a significant impact. It's SODIMM.

I'm considering printing one of the many cute little boxes on thingiverse [thingiverse.com]. Just have to make sure it doesn't get too hot and melt Wink (54 °C for PLA+)

Nice! Hey, stuff happens. Acer isn't exactly known for its great quality control. It's all good as long as you're prepared to DIY. I still think it'd be a good router and lightweight virtualization host. Questionable NAS without ECC, but Synology/QNAP's low-end models also don't do ECC so 🤷.

It runs on dual channel mode when the matching dual channel RAM installed , see the screen capture.
Also the wireless chip Network Card: Atheros/Qualcomm QCA9377 is a very capable Wi-Fi/BT combo chipset
