There is no good or bad...as long as the PC to do whatever you expect to do on your own fun.
Actually, I have bunch of GPU cards around, I use the 88 PC to drive my external 4x GPU for mining with external 1000w PSU
.... can you take a snapshot of it, and post it, ...right now, ... that is pretty creative use of the celeron 88. What interface do you use to connect with the 4 GPU's. Post pics! Thanks

The recommendations are generalized.. It is NOT taking into account that your PC runs 6w at idle. The general recommendation is completely foreign to this machine because of how little power it takes (it is a complete and total outlier from the industry in general). Gauging the power needed for this system can be easily done. You measure the system under load, add 30W (in the case of the 1030), and if you are under 65W, then you're ok. In my case I am using the 90W because I have it on hand, it is identical voltage to the unit sold for this sytem (when upgraded by acer).

The general recommendations are for the highest powered systems these cards will typically encounter. In other words, if they say 300w, it's because they're allocating 30W on top of a 250W minimum required PSU size. And 250w is a fairly standard minimum in the industry. We don't need 250, we need 65 (apparently much less, load reports of 25W seem to be the norm). so add the same 30w figure to that 65W, and you're at 95W.

Can you run a 1030 on this machine? In all likelihood probably yes, HOWEVER, I don't expect the performance to be much higher than my 730 (which runs at pcie 2.0 already). I would highly recommend getting ahold of the 90w power brick that ships with this unit when upgraded by acer (or compatible acer alternative). My POWER brick from my laptop is a LITE-ON 90W 19.7V unit.

And by the way, I decided to try the included 65W PSU, and it booted fine. Now that's not to say I'm going to jump into 3d mode with my overclocks on with this power brick, but the system will boot with the 65 W unit and a GT 730 (28W TDP?)... Honestly, it can probably run 3d mode, but I'm going to measure the wattage on the 90W before I go burning up this power brick
10-15 years ago, I used to build PC's and blew a number of power supplies adding graphic cards. It doesn't happen right away, it may take a number of months, and maybe a few power spikes, and bye, bye, PC.

now, guys buying an 88 dollar laptop PC wanting to put in graphic cards in it, ... seems like a ticking time bomb. Smilie

I do have more expensive ACERS I could put graphic cards in , with pci-4th gen slot. But I bought xbox series s around month ago, so I lost the interest. I have no problems with you and others experimenting, it sounds like fun. It is no longer what I choose to do with my ACERS. Smilie

This Celeron J4125 , actually it is Gen 9 Intel CPU that beats out all your 20 year old computers all together at fraction energy consumption

Nonetheless, the math is there. I've built hundreds if not over a thousand computers personally, and I may have blown a single PSU. The "bye bye PC" is actually... "bye bye $20 power brick".. That said, before this system leaves the testing bench, the wattage under load will be measured and I will report back. You are allowing the general recommendation to hold relevance in your calculations, when it truly has no bearing to a lower power PC like this. As you stated, a laptop PC.. What are the minimum power supply requirements for laptop graphics cards, as that would be a much more accurate general minimum requirement.. would it not?

... there is a difference between what you are doing, and the newbie that gets the PC and wants to add graphics card to this laptop PC without your experience and background . I was reading your posts and you are experimenting with what this laptop PC can do , using a more powerful 90 watt laptop power supply. I would think, you too, would warn others that don't have the experience you do, to be careful, right? That is all I'm doing. Err on the side of caution, because the INTEL 600 is pretty good at watching videos. I am impressed with it for an 88 dollar laptop pc. Smilie

p.s. Also my experience with blown power supplies is a lot more gets destroyed than the Power Supply. You only had one POWER SUPPLY blow in over 1,000 builds. Again, my experience is different because the power problems come a few months down the road, not when I install and test. In any case, after your research maybe you and others will come up with good LAPTOP graphics card that is very low powered, that would be perfect for the celeron 88! That would help everybody.

I just tried this 1030 with both a 65w and 90w power adapter. The machine wouldn't boot. I wouldn't even get the startup beep. I even disconnected the DVD drive to try and reduce the power load.

Is it possible to mount 4x3.5 HDDs inside this case after removing its original DVD+HD rack?

its a hobby and we find that fun. there are plenty of people upgrading old commedors and apples from the 80s and 90s era.

Not easily since the MB has only 2 SATA headers onboard. You can do crazy stuff like get a PCI-e to SATA or M2 to SATA adapter but that probably is way outside the design spec of the system. If you try it, report back. 88 celeron gang wants to know.

At this point, most of those frequents this thread have turn the $88 Celeron machine into a project machine instead of a daily driver. From what I read; the experience level exists in this forum way outstrips the average PC joe.

People are not here to replace their main PCs. Instead, this is an analogy to restoring a classic car, rebuilding a film camera, or souping up a Toyota corolla?

If you haven't read the 400 posts in here, these are not the droids you are looking for, move along. PeacePeacePeace

FYI, I temporarily put the Acer motherboard in an ATX mid tower case and tried a GT 1030, RX 550, and a HD 5450. I did not get any video output on any of them. The PCI-E slot may not support GPU's. I dont know if someone could run GPU-Z or some other software to get some info on what the slot supports. I no longer have Windows loaded to check.

Update...I did find the below command for linux and it shows x16 but not sure what it will take to get any GPU to work in it. Good luck to you.

$ sudo dmidecode | grep 'PCI'
PCI is supported
Designation: PCIE1
Type: x16 PCI Express 2 x16
Type: x1 PCI Express 2 x1

UPDATE...someone got a gpu to work. see post 385 from @musashi_1707

I see that you transplanted the motherboard into a different case, Could you please tell me how you identified the pinout for the front header. I see 4 wires going to the power button and led combo. I figure 2 for the power led and 2 for the power button but I want to make sure I plug it in correctly. Also wondering where the appropriate pins are for the reset switch and HDD LED. A pinout map for the front header would be great if you happen to know where to find it. Thanks.
