I've been out of high school for over 20 years and they're still using this same calculator and it's at the same price. Hopefully the bootleg calculator games have improved since then to help pass the time in Calculus class. I learned more real world skills playing Drug Wars on my beloved square body TI calculator.

I teach AP Calculus. If you can snag a college discount, it's worth it to get this calculator. You can't use a phone on an AP test, and though any graphing calculator will work, the multi color format and the faster processor make it worth the money. They're also pretty much indestructible.

Finally, you can sell it for around $80 when you're done with it.

With inflation, the calculator is less expensive than it used to be. $100 in 1997 is about $187 now. /Not saying the near monopoly is good.

They use a company called sheerid to verify. At first they ask for basic info and I'm not sure what they check it against but if that doesn't work, they'll request more documentation like a bill or class schedule.

Definitely a good deal on the calc, but sort of a waste on the 20%. I used mine recently for a bunch of stuff and it's applies to the order, not just an item - as long as they're not on the very extensive exclusion list.

I would still get a used one off of Ebay or Amazon. Students will only use it for math class, and then it will gather dust.

Personally, unless a test doesn't allow it, TI-Inspire CS-II CAS all day everyday. Greatest calculator ever.

Big time nostalgia seeing this. Spent so much time teaching myself to program on my TI-83+ back in high school, it is single-handedly responsible for my career now. Get your kids to crack open the manual and learn something, if you can pull them off the internet for 5 minutes.

There are definitely some QOL additions on this model versus the one from the 90s you reference. If my parents were buying I'd get this model or look for it used for around 60. Hardwareswap Reddit has them occasionally.

Go for all the extra bells and whistles that you think you need. The fact is that most courses are written to use a ti-83plus or newer. The extras simply aren't needed. If you can get this model for cheap used that's still a win, it's just not necessary

I graduated with a degree in statistics. I used a 2000s ti84. Of course, it was fine and it worked. Since graduating, I bought a nicer calculator. It's not a scam. I would've preferred to have the nicer one at the time if I could have. I absolutely would've bought the nicer one if I didn't already have one.

I don't know what your criteria is for what is and is not a "scam", but it certainly isn't the same as mine and probably most others.

What kind of computer could you buy in 1997 with $1000 vs today? That is a more accurate comparison

Active teachers get 15%... they don't seem to check when you register though so it's better to be a student today (they didn't ask for any id when i registered as a teacher). .
