I've been out of high school for over 20 years and they're still using this same calculator and it's at the same price. Hopefully the bootleg calculator games have improved since then to help pass the time in Calculus class. I learned more real world skills playing Drug Wars on my beloved square body TI calculator.

I teach AP Calculus. If you can snag a college discount, it's worth it to get this calculator. You can't use a phone on an AP test, and though any graphing calculator will work, the multi color format and the faster processor make it worth the money. They're also pretty much indestructible.

Finally, you can sell it for around $80 when you're done with it.

With inflation, the calculator is less expensive than it used to be. $100 in 1997 is about $187 now. /Not saying the near monopoly is good.

funny how i had to get this expensive ti-84 for earlier math classes, but after getting into my actual major classes, all I need is the cheap TI-BAii Plus

I still have one. Eventually the little ones will need it. I had no idea they offered colored screens now… for about the same price. Mine was $80/88. Trust me The resell on these is NOT $80. I tried several times.

I would strongly recommend people compare with Casio graphing calculators first, esp. in regards to the speed. This video does an excellent comparison [youtube.com] between the Casio FX-CG50 and the TI-84 Plus CE color graphing calculators. The Casio absolutely blows away the TI in regards to calculation speed. See the 5:42 and the 6:35 mark for sample calculation and graphing head to head speed comparisons.

EDIT: Both Target and Amazon are currently selling the Casio FX-CG50 for $81, no college student verification needed. And if you don't need a color screen, the Casio FX-9750GIII is available for around $50.

At least where my kids go, they can only use the Ti-84. Emulators work at home, but for exams etc, only the Ti-84. Besides, they teach using the Ti-84.

People swear by the casio fx115 / 991 but I like my ti-36x
I had both, the 89 for general use and exams and then before the licensure exam got one of the approved casios to get familiar with it and used that for a few months as my main calculator. Then right before the test made sure i knew how to use its matrix and calculus functions which those were a huge time saver not having to do them manually on the exam.

^^^ Casio FXCG50 is what I got and it's a HUGE upgrade over TI, I will never go back.

Drug Wars was awesome. I remember that game too, but it always glitches out as you really started to get rolling.
