I googled the model and it shows on sale at $89 from $129. Of course Wally site shows $279.99 to make you think the deal is that much better.
This is not full HD. It's 1366 x 768 LCD.
For me, the text looks blurry with 14 inch screen at that res.
This is probably as cheap as you can go for a basic laptop for email, web surfing and everyday activities.

This has the lowest specs you can get on a modern laptop / chromebook (unless you get one with a hard drive instead of an SSD)

It should be fine as a chromebook though since they don't need much power. It looks like it charges through USB C which is a plus.

Also looks like updates until 2027: https://support.google.com/chrome...Jun%202027

this arrived two days after I ordered it. Everything was packed nicely and securly. Its pretty nice for the price for sure. I'm not use to anything but windows so this will take some getting use to. I mostly wanted it for when I travel and want to stream shows. I found out quickly it will not sync with some apps such as hulu, but I will be able to stream from the website. Time will tell.

Install Linux on this and you could have a cheap laptop that works fairly well
is it easy to do? I thought chromebooks they make it almost impossible to do fresh linux install.
I want linux only, with no chrome OS crap.

Linux on Chromebook is a toggle that runs a vm. Think of it like WSL2 on Windows. The VM sandbox has access to the other bits of the OS like filesystem.

the last time this was on sale, i bought the lenovo flex 3 as well... i ended up returning the flex 3 even tho the IPS panel was SO MUCH better, imo. I regret keeping this CB3... i should have went with my gut and kept the flex 3. while anyone can say, "the tn panel is usable" "it's not bad" blah blah blah.. if you even consider that you might not like it.. don't get it. I regret it. it definitely wasn't worth saving "$30" even when the screen is directly in front of you... it's very obvious it's TN panel and i find it annoying and distracting.

that said.. the flex 3 can't output 4k cause it uses arm and this cb3 can output 4k cause it uses intel.. so the middle ground, if you wanna output 4k, would be the acer cb for $99 when on sale Acer (CB311-9H-C1JW)

I have one similar, if not identical, to this that I purchased last year also for ~$80-90 after seeing it on SD. For the price it does the job but I never felt satisfied with chrome OS, which I didn't really know too much about at the time. But without a backlit keyboard, a better quality screen, and minimal specs just to have a few web browser tabs opened, it didn't take long before I stopped picking it up and became a dust collector. Keeping it for when my son gets a little older and starts asking for his own (he's 3 at the moment). For a beater device for kids, go for it, but I don't personally recommend them for anything else. I picked up the 14" Dell Inspiron that was on sale for $345 ($315 with the right combination of CB offers) 2 weeks ago and wow what a night and day difference. Yes it's 3x the price as this but you get the full experience of being on a legitimate functioning laptop.

Does this have an HDMI port and the sync function to attached it to a big screen tv? I have a lower level Samsung chromebook and it doesn't have the syncing function

It depends on the school. I use them in my school, but I know others that use iPads. They're just more intuitive for 5 year olds, but I like having them learn about using a keyboard since they probably have iPads at home. For the price, it's much more useful than a crappy tablet for under $100.

yeah, you have to unlock the boot loader and disable write protection, but then you can open it up and install anything. but with these specs, most anything other than chromeos is going to run like a dog.

depends on your school district. but if they use chromebooks they'll probably assign one to your kid.

If they do use a CB in school, it is usually provided by the school.

This is mostly for security purposes, and to make sure it works right/well on their networks.

Our kids had a 'school Chromebook', and all it engendered in them was a hatred of Chromebooks (because all they've used is crappy school Chromebooks).

So we bought them a couple of nicer (better, faster, more robust) Chromebooks via a SlickDeal, and... we soon found out they were unusable for school (because the school uses a locked-down system, with different 'educational' user accounts, etc).

So now my wife and I have a couple of really nice Chromebooks, lol.

Disclosure: I've always been a Chromebook/ChromeOS fan(boy).

I've always considered ChromeOS a good laptop system, but never felt confident about Chromebooks as a Windows laptop replacement (e.g. for work, or other 'serious' stuff).

Getting a higher-end Chromebook changed my outlook/vision/religion.

A year ago I picked up an Acer Chromebook Spin 713, and finally saw what Chromebooks were truly capable of.

So much to the point that I 'traded in' my Windows laptop at work, and got a higher-specc'd desktop.

My Spin 713 is now my go-to laptop for work and non-work.

And since my employer is a Microsoft campus, Office365 makes it even more usable. There's pretty much nothing I can't do work-wise on my Chromebook, that I could do previously on my Windows laptop.

But yeah, I also have a $99 Chromebook, and it's pretty much a dust-collector, too. I'm thinking about giving it a factory reset, and 'donating' it to a small/local non-profit that I volunteer with on the weekends. It's not EOL until 2027 or 2028, iirc.
