this isnt a good deal since you can get 3080 12gb variant for the same price after rebate. also, prices will keep going down. sucks that people keep buying at this price thereby preventing it from going lower.

You are right, but unfortunately this is one of the lowest prices for the 3080 at the moment.
Welcome to slickdeals. I'm waiting on sub $600 for a new 6800XT or 3080 12GB... TBH these things will be going for $450 in the used market a year from now, but for people who don't want to wait and want to play games now, I can see why they are just glad to have the cards back at MSRP.

Very similar in performance. The ftw3 does have the bigger heatsink that dissipates more heat, and has higher power limitations. You'll have to adjust fan curve and voltages specific to your card since the chips in these vary quite a bit. And there's more rgb on the ftw3 which of course = better performance/more fps. Ha

Mostly agree except the preventing thing. It's just economics we can't control it any more than they can. The prices will fall. It's just you have to wait longer for it to fall more. that's what industry analyist are even saying. They are trying to induce you into buying now using marketing techniques, slowly lowering the price and judging market reaction. You likely know this though. You just don't want to wait. I appreciate that it's been 2 years. I hear you. that said this may help:
In the end though the price of gpus has climbed so much faster than what everyone's making and the fact that there are alternatives now that are good (consoles are extremely compelling this generation), and it's only gaming again will put a ton of downward pressure on prices. It's not like they can get infinite profit per gpu sales matter as well, and for nvidia in particular as people begin to look at alternatives it hurts them too in the long term which they must be aware of. Indeed, what AMD may be doing is positioning their gpus to compete with nvidia directly, and saying screw it consoles are value we'll do our midrange there. They make so many sales in consoles that will only grow at this price to performance ratio w/o out adjustments on the card side. nvidia is aware, because they've attempted to build devices and services and foundered. Now they are at a point w/o mining where it's a big deal.
Let's play a what if. Let' say they keep prices at 800+ or 600 for mid-range, and they continue to refuse to sell at say 300 which could then over perform and undercut some consoles (2 years later). Over time this is what will happen:
- consoles will continue to grow.
- other players will enter the market like intel. People laugh at intel but if were AMD or NVidia I'd be concerned. They have all the talent and resources they need and more. They got to 3060 level already and the technology foundationally is impressive. They are doing everything the other players are and in some fundamental cases are better, now, and they are less reliant on TSMC or other fabs. Sure they are one level behind but the minute they close on consoles with a good gpu (which are about 3070 in the case of an xbox) they can ship a very compelling product depending on price, and even now it's only a software issue and to be expected.
- Apple, and other companies will simply make their own gpus that game, and yes they also have the software issue, but they also have huge number of people.
TLDR, It's market size too. not just profit.
A lot of pc gamers are from the 90's, and 2ks. Younger people as a whole actually use mobile, tablets and more. If i were nvidia i'd be worried about my overall sales volume from customers that are real customers likely to be around for many years. They've lost sight of that. Their ceo is particularly short sighted and out of touch the pricing each generation has jumped. Amd too who everyone seems to love has been aggressively pushing up the prices of cpus, and gpus as well. Fundamentally this won't work long term at the rate, in particular this generation has hit. Look at the general tepid reaction. it's real, and not people just trying to get a deal. A lot of people have better places to put 6-800 than a gpu purchase. This is why i bought an xbox for 450 that is competitive with a 6700xt/3070 and that supports used games. I 'm not historically a console person, i'm a money person.
There is no value here. You can buy this or not. I can spend 800 anytime that will be easy for the forseeable future as long as we have jobs. People will buy this they are enthusiasts and tell themselves what they need to that it's a value. It doesn't matter assuming we continue to be market economy this works itself out eventually though it may take time as people jump to alternatives and they shrink their market share. This is not a good deal. I say go ahead and spend all the money you want on it. I'm waiting.

How does this compare to the FTW3 edition?
I agree with Max CC. Only reason i opted for 3070 is the best gpu performance per buck AND electric power consumption. Otherwise (if I have the need for it) I'd go with 3080 TI FTW.
Though probably not the intention of the original poster, this did remind me that I have a Mini Tower and to remember to check the sizing of GPUs before buying.

Interested in that card. Where did you see/find the 3080 12GB for the same price?

Fair price based on performance for 3080 10GB is $659, but you have to discount it being two year old tech
