300 nits glossy yikes!

our lenovo 7i is 400 nits glossy and we can barely see anything if the room is bright or there's some sunlight

lower brightness would seem borderline unusable

Note this CPU has only 2 performance cores. Fine for office work, not so much for anything intensive.

The CPU upgrade to an i7 they offer is also only 2 real cores.
These Alder Lake 2+8 chips should demolish any Tiger Lake 4-core, and are not far off from the 6-cores.

i5-1235U [cpubenchmark.net] (2P+8E, 12 threads)
Single: 3482
Multi: 14123

i7-11390H [cpubenchmark.net] (4P, 8 threads)
Single: 3027
Multi: 10590

i7-11600H [cpubenchmark.net] (6P, 12 threads)
Single: 3159
Multi: 15907

Maybe there are some areas where having only 2 big cores falls flat, and maybe there are power efficiency issues (Rembrandt is said to be better at low TDPs). But these are far from weak.

Intel is going to stick with this strategy for years to come. We will probably see 8+32 cores on the desktop.

I have the older gen ThinkBook (2020) with the i7-1165g7.

It works well. I like the capability. I could increase RAM to 32, but have not yet.

My only complaint are the power drain and the inability to set the Power Conservation mode to 80% charge. (Lenovo engineers put it at 60% and unlike the ThinkPad, it is not scalable. What a bunch of morons.)

The nice thing about this ThinkBook is that you can have 3 displays and STILL have it charging and powering one of the external displays.
- Display 1: tent mode
- Display 2: USB-C display (powered via USB-C)
- Display 3: HDMI (self powered via AC)

*You can buy a USB-C adapter that will have two HDMI inputs.

I have a ThinkPad for work, and it only has one USB-C, so unless I bring the dock (which has a power block), I can only have 2 displays (main and HDMI) when powering the ThinkPad via AC. Likewise, I have to supply power to the external display.

Thanks OP, finally pulled the trigger on a new laptop. Been using my 2015 MBP Retina but the battery has about had it.

Was holding out for a 12th Gen processor + 16GB RAM + 2-in-1 design under $750, and this fits the bill perfect!

Does anyone know if the main SSD (boot SSD) is upgradable? Or if there's room for an additional M.2?

The SUPERTHINKJULY code doesn't work if you upgrade to the i7 cpu

I played with this for a couple of hours, and went back and forth between the i5 and i7... at one point it acted like SUPERTHINKJULY wasn't working at all, but could still get the i5 within $30 of OP. And then I got it to work again under the i7, so I ended up buying the i7 16/512 for $733

Does anybody know differences between a thinkbook vs a ThinkPad?

Which one is better and is this one a good deal for the price?

Good specs, but 1080p, 300 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio is a hard pass.

I built it and I have the slickdeals extension and it went through a list of like 10 codes and that's what it ended up with. It took a total of two codes.

Yes - we're set to deploy tons of these over the next year. It has two NVME drive slots. (or at least the i7 model does)

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

My business purchased both an i5 and i7 version for evaluation before standardizing on it for this model year. Overall, we're impressed.

Build quality is quite good. Fans are quiet. Performance is basically what you expect it to be - very good for non-gaming applications. The FHD camera (on our i7 model) is surprisingly good - significantly better than the 720p version. The screen gets bright enough and the color range is good. Touch works well along with the pen. (the prior generation 14s had issues with the pen not working.... ever)

There are a few downsides though - the screen is just 16:9 and glossy. Xe graphics are somewhat inferior to the Vega 7/8 of the AMD U series. Thunderbolt ports (there are two) are only on the left side along with a HDMI 2.0 (not 2.1) port. Additionally, AMD powered versions of the Thinkbooks, in my experience, are just better. They are quieter, perform better, and generally cost less. (we have hundreds deployed) That said - there is no AMD powered Thinkbook 2 in 1.

Overall, if you want a 2 in 1, I don't believe you can do much better for the price. Easy to order and easy to return if needed. My only suggestion is that you stay far away from the blue version. While it does look good, it's a fingerprint magnet, and the silver is very much not.
