Fire tablets are what you get for someone when you're obligated to buy them a gift and show that you love them but really you don't.

I've set up about 15 of them over the last few years, I have no idea why anyone is complaining

Maybe some people just don't know how to root/hack their devices?

But fwiw, as someone who once paid the $15 to unlock ads... once was enough for me to 'learn my lesson'.

I've since had 4-5 Fire tablets, and have never paid (or otherwise taken steps, e.g. via Fire Toolbox) to get rid of ads.

They're just (imho) so unobtrusive, showing up only on the lock screen.

I know different people have different opinions (and 'ymmv' and all that), but... I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but... I don't actually mind them.

I 'never' notice them, and the handful of times that I do, they're either:
  1. for some stupid game that I'm never going to buy (usually either Solitaire or Bejeweled, iirc); or,
  2. something that I was actually interested in.
Agreed. I've seen several complain about the ads. The only impact it has is you couldn't have a personalized screen saver. The ads are basically a screensaver. Once opened, you'd have no clue it includes add. Plus there's several avenues to avoiding them.

I think that changed a few months ago. If your tab has taken the latest updates, you can no longer "debloat", and I think that locks down the boot loader.. Did I miss that? I have a hd8 that the tool box no longer debloats after amazon updates (I reset and restarted from scratch and did not know that a update was in the pipe).

I was able to trade it in for $25 and got the 20% off the HD10 though last prime day. So I guess you have little to loose if you just want to try one. I got mine from a deal posted here a few years back and it came with the "Dock" that kind of made it a echo show for $30 as I recall so I really did not loose anything on it.

Item(s) Subtotal: $149.99
Shipping & Handling: $2.99
Lightning Deal: -$75.00
Tablet Trade-In: -$30.00
Free Shipping: -$2.99
-----
Total before tax: $44.99
Estimated tax to be collected: $3.32
Gift Card Amount: -$48.31

On a side note does any one know if you can figure out when a new tab was built using the DSN#. I wonder if the new one they sent me was old enough to not be upgraded to OS8 yet.

Obviously you do not see your own limitations. The device itself, especially if you were to compare $$ to performance, is an exceptional purchase. It's very easily migrated from the Fire OS to normal Android OS. Even if you just add the Google Play store, you have the same options as a non-Fire tablet. I challenge anyone to find the performance you get from a Fire tablet for $30. We'll be waiting.

I mean if you count all the effort and man hours required to root and debloat them, they're probably not worth more than $20

You may have missed something.
I just did this to a Fire 10.

There is no lock for which a key cannot be fashioned.

Glad to hear. Just track down the XDA thread and make sure you're comfortable with the process. It's easy for a veteran but might be intimidating for the novice.
Can you link thread in here? So many different Model numbers and xda doesn't separate them out

You can still unlock the bootloader with the latest updates, I did it last, in March. You need to pop off the plastic back and use a paperclip to short it then you can you replace the bootloader with TWRP using USB cable and scripts. Pop case back on and load lineage off SD card or USB drive using TWRP. Like I said not difficult but intimidating if you've never done something like that before. Should be videos on YT.

I'm about done with Amazon tablets.

The price-point is nice, got them for my kids while traveling, but when I actually have to work on them to make sure things are setup right for the kids they are so frustratingly slow I don't want to deal with them anymore.

I've also had problems when I've paid for DLC for kids games on my master profile it's not there on the kids profile.

I've actually experienced that it's easier to use Amazon's ecosystem on straight Android than it is fully inside of Amazon's ecosystem.

I like my cheap Lenovo e10 Chromebook tablet well enough, and it's cheap enough, that I might just switch the kids over to one of those next time.
It doesn't help as much on pure Android but the Fire OS will get a little boost in performance if you reboot into the menu and select clear cache. I don't have much on a tablet which I would mind losing so I do a full reinstall every so often.

As far as games for kids, add Google Play Store. There are a few tutorials online which show how to do it. It's pretty basic.

It's still insanely slow with Play. I've been IT for 25 years, don't want to put a lot of time into doing it at home.

Oh with that experience, you should definitely have a better option than a Lenovo, especially as your kids get older. There's limitless tech possibilities if you're creative.

7th Gen 32GB Fire HD 10 for $35 or 8th Gen 32GB Fire HD 8 for $30. What's the difference besides screen size? Which one is a better deal?
