Ironically, my son just asked specifically for Mario Party "not that new superstars one". We had borrowed them from library and the kids preferred the older one.

Thanks OP, added to the birthday shopping list :-)

New one is better, but this one is still fun to go back to every now and then. Especially for some of the mini games.

Agreed. Mario Party Superstars is significantly better than Super Mario Party.

I was one of the few people who thought SMP was decent and a step in the right direction, but it's impossible to go back now after playing MPS. It feels so slow by comparison for absolutely no reason. Though I did like the unique dice/allies gimmick and kind of wish they kept some version of that in future games, maybe as a bonus mode.

Which is better for small children? I haven't played either

Am I the only person that prefers this one? I have both and though there is one less board, I like that players have special dice and like the motion controls. They should have done the same thing as Mario kart and just added more games and boards through paid dlc

I really doubt small children will be able to tell the difference between them. From an amount of content perspective, Super Mario Party has more extra things to do besides the board game mode so it might keep them occupied for longer.

I would second this and say the first one is best if your kids like motion controls. You have no option to use a traditional controller, which I really dislike. If they are more into motion gaming, get them this one. New one does have motion controls as well, but I would recommend this one. Also has a bonus rhythm mode they might like.

People bash this one but my kids love it. We have both versions and they love getting an ally and the larger roster of characters. It's worth the money.

I have both and my gf and I prefer "Party". Its definitely a bare bones game but the motion controls (and motion controlled mini games), ally system, and special dice make this feel like an evolution of the series. Superstars has more content but comes off feeling like a remake and its age kinda shows. We're still glad to have both and want more Mario Party on Switch
