Walmart.com has Schwinn Axum Large frame (19") mountain bike in black and blue for $348.
That's a $100 savings from the regular price.
Shipping is free

This one one of the best value entry level hardtails. The components are less than ideal but the frame is upgradable. You can ride it as is, and upgrade the components in the future. Check out various reviews on youtube on this bike.
The only downside of this deal is that the frame is only in large size, good for someone around 6 foot tall.
If you are around 6' tall and want to try mountain biking and don't want to spend too much money on it, this is the bike you might consider.

Some of the features:
- 29" 2.6 wheels
- tapered head tube
- 1 by 8 drivetrain (cassette)
- mechanical disk brakes
- internal cable routing for the seat dropper post

How does this compare to the Northrock XC27 that Costco sells?

I ride blue and black trails in So Cal (not to mention bike park) where climbing can be as high as 2k feet on a 10 mile ride. I had a bike like the Bikes direct and the Axum climbs WAY way better stock and is much more confident on descents. If you've never tried a modern geometry bike you can't say anything because the advantages are real.
I have the DP version of the Axum and can confirm its greater climbing performance than older bikes. After upgrading the fork, I really like it and enjoy every ride. The other components held up well after over a year of daily rides. BTW, I am also in So Cal.

Mine is a dp also but the KS dropper was DOA, got a partial refund and got a PNW, then sent a message to Schwinn and they sent me a new KS dropper with lever and cable lol. I have a Boost Markhour on mine with remote but it actually slackened my head tube angle down to 65 ish and climbing suffered so I got a 70 mm stem which helped a lot. Where do you ride usually?

This is better frame and upgrade ability wise. Stock it runs and can fit wider decent tires and already has a 1x8 drivetrain and the wheels are 30 mm which are wider. Also the rear wheel can handle up to a 11 speed casette while the XC27 is limited to 7 speeds. The main thing is the frame though, the Axum has modern specs which provide better climbing and descending performance and you can upgrade to any fork unlike the XC which has an older style head tube which limits you to around 3 modern forks. This is a better bike and is cheaper.

Can anyone give any insight to this compared to the Boss Three 700cc that Costco sells? Honestly just going to be using this to ride around the neighborhood and maybe to the grocery store. No more than a 2 miles at a time. I'm 6'1 for reference. Also open to any other suggestions in the price range and lower for my needs. Haven't used a bike since college because I didn't have a car and would always go to Walmart and get something for $150 or so that would last me through the winters and those were fine for my needs

Do not buy a Schwin. They use to be badass but they're trash now. Sure you could replace parts but no matter how much you polish it its still a turd. Plus components are expensive and atm they're hard to find. You're better off with other options. I'd check out bikesdirect.com

Bikesdirect is trash. They sell outdated frames and geometry with ok parts. You can't change the geometry. The Axum has modern mountain bike geometry and all the parts can be changed.

Besides, just look at the bikesdirect website. You trust a company to build good bikes with a website like that?

Proof it's a turd? I've literally taken it to the same trails I've taken my $2k full suspension and a bike park with some upgrades. On my local trail I actually pulled faster times also with the Schwinn on Strava.

Stop talking until you figure out what you're talking about. This is the best thing you're going to get at this price point.

so the Kent Trouvaille should be a good bike on paper. It has a lot of good quality, name brand components that would normally cost $800 anywhere else. But the quality of the bike itself is questionable.
I bought one and
1) The rear wheel wasn't latched in place, so it bounced around in shipping and the sprockets scratched up a lot of the frame
2) The chain was routed incorrectly through the rear derailleur pulley and was grinding against a metal tab (I have read stories from others having this same problem) and
3) Something is wrong with my frame and the rear brake rotor is grinding against the brake caliper because of it. The rotor isn't bent and the caliper is mounted as far over as it can be, so it can't be fixed. I'm not sure if it was bent in shipping or if it was just welded wrong, but neither surprises me.
So I'm going to be returning mine since it's completely unrideable. It's also currently out of stock. If you do buy one, it's going to require a lot of work to get it up and running, and even then its a gamble, but it has the potential to be an amazing cheap bike.
My Axum DP was perfect out of the box, even the derailleur only needed minor adjustments and the paint is perfect. The only thing that was wrong was the KS dropper was leaking but that's KS not a Schwinn issue and Schwinn actually sent me a new dropper with lever right away (also got a $100 refund before from Walmart to buy a PNW dropper). I'm so impressed coming from Specialized and Polygon bikes that I wouldn't hesitate to get a Schwinn in the future. The stock derailleur is An Altus clone (I have an Altus on my specialized) that actually shifts crisply and the brakes are Tektro Aries clones (again I had them on my Specialized) with 180 mm front rotor - I actually took the Axum to a bike park and rode a black trail with the stock brakes but I upgraded recently to a TRP Spyke up front and it's a big improvement.

I feel like there's a lot of discussion about price and comparing this to other bike store brands, but nobody is talking about how easy it is to get an incredible bike for next to nothing in the used marketplace. Especially mountain bikes since people get big aspirations and then end up only using them once or twice. For $400 you can get quite a bit of bike used, especially a hardtail

hell for a few hundred bucks more you can a marin palisades trail 2 from jenson USA

Agree with the Marin. You can cite "dated geometry" all you want, but biking hasn't changed. Two wheels still roll on the ground just fine.

Very strong disagree about the used marketplace though. At least from what I've seen. Not seeing all of these 2 year old bikes that people gave up on. Mostly seeing 15 year old bikes that aren't worth it, or $2500 bikes where people "know what they've got". Better off buying that Axum or the Marin if you have the extra cash.
