not scientific, rather based on posts, suggest the Pattern :
blue: issues, including "crappy" touchpad, not upgrading to W11
black: minimal issues.
So I think I identified how to tell. I found another one at a different Walmart and as you can see in the pic, the sticker on the outer wrapper has a date. This is the one that I just got and the laptop has a touchpad is working great. I can also confirm that the system info says this one is from 3/2021. In contrast, the one with the bad touchpad that I have has a 3/2022 date on the outer sticker with system info showing 7/2021. They also have different wifi cards as someone had mentioned before. The one with the good touchpad also did not have a windows 11 sticker on the outside and did not prompt to update to windows 11 during setup.
Hope this is helpful for anyone looking. Look for the earlier build dates, in my case 10/2021 sticker was good and 3/2022 sticker was bad. I'm not sure it actually correlates with color but build date instead.

She will love this! I just went ahead and bought it. She mainly needs better ram and storage. This being a decently new i5 is a cherry on top. She is not a tech geek so the screen should be fine. And to top it all off, OTD was $265.
I will set it up for her tomorrow and see how it holds up. I can give an update/first hands review when I am done with its setup!
Edit: I posted a small first hands review and wanted to put it here in case more people could see it. Also, ours does charge on USB-C.
So I picked it up last night and opened it to see how the general build quality was. Everything felt great. The top cover I believe is metal. The bottom is plastic. Keyboard is decent actually so far. I don't like the layout, but travel seems to be decent. Screen is alright. Not the brightest, but we should not expect that at this price. Colors are fine, I am guessing this is somewhere in the middle of 45 to 72 NTSC.
Setting up was quick and she seems to be able to use it fairly fine. I made sure that it had all internals. I am weird about that stuff so I just make sure. 16 gigs ram, i5, SSD. All checked out. I saw a youtube video about this exact same laptop from I believe ETA prime and apparently, the BIOS is decently untouched, so you can go and tinker. He upped the TDP on the i5 from 15 to 30 and it doubled his benchmark scores. We won't be doing that yet unless she thinks it's slow but it feels speedy even to me. I am sure that bump could also eat battery life if not plugged into power.
Seriously, it felt good enough that for $265 OTD I went and bought another this morning to have around as a spare laptop. As someone else mentioned, the internal components alone are probably worth more than the price. I am getting a keyboard, screen, fan, and chassis for free.
And yes, mine also has a spot for an SSD upgrade.
Hope this helps someone!

I'm hoping someone would be willing to sell for cost + ship.
My mom was able to get two for my kids accross the state for my two kids, but my wife also wants to get one for my stepson.
We had a store that said 2-3 in stock, but after trying two times to have them check everywhere, no luck. I also bought online and tried to return/rebuy in store with no luck. The guy, who was a team lead and seemed very knowledgeable, said that there wasn't a way to immediately rebuy because anything like this where they scan the serial because it has to go through some kind of process, and it might go back into their stock or it might not… I also tried getting them to just pricematch the in-store price and they said they could only match online prices to in-store items, not the other way around.
My wife also went a different direction across the state and found a place that was supposed to be in stock, but they said they wouldn't sell it to her for less than 350. And then they said that they didn't have any in stock at all anyway.
Nobody in FL has any money (me included now with four kids) and it seems everyone gets by by buying and reselling stuff, so there's never anything in stock, ugh.
If anyone can help, that would be amazing. She is talking about just paying the full amount, but she and we don't really have that kind of extra money to waste, especially after just already buying the two.
Thanks!

They're inventory control is infamously inaccurate even when talking to people at the store.
I have to question what percentage of people bought this and did not have issues with quality, build etc. Going by past threads on this model.
