XM4s are amazing. I won't have to buy a pair of headphones for another decade.

I just got the XM4 from them and they look new. I don't know how loud jrod needs to listen to headphones but they're screaming at half volume for me. The noise canceling works great but can be a little uncomfortable for just a second with sudden air pressure changes like opening a door. I thought about waiting for a deal for these but I'm happy I didn't spend the extra $110... mine were on sale for $149.

I was in the same boat as you and disappointed with the "quiet" music but I found a solution at least in my case:

If you happen to be an iOS user, there is an iOS setting that's on by default to protect your hearing while wearing headphones:

Settings > Sounds and Haptics > Headphone Safety > Reduce Loud Sounds > OFF

This was a game changer for my XM4's. Obviously applies to other headphones as well. Hope this helps!

Chiming in that my xm4s were purchased through secondipity and were flawless as well. The improvements to sound quality and overall volume on the xm5 compared to xm4 was negligible. And I listen for the differences.

Design is superior and very attractive in my personal opinion compared to xm4, though the xm4s have a subtle beauty in its own right and may even be preferable to some in this regard. But sound quality alone was no where close to meriting the extra spend on the xm5 compared to xm4.

They're under a much larger parent company and it wouldn't surprise me if they boost their products. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again.

Have you tried putting them in the right equalizer setting?
The XM5s sounded pretty basic out of the box, but once I messed with the equalizer a bit, they were phenomenal.
Just search up "xm5/4 equalizer settings" on google for some good options.

I can only tell you some YouTube reviewers did not like the xm5 vs xm4. They preferred the 4. Don't have them myself, but do your research!

Considering this. Every Secondipity Sony Headset I've ever purchased has been flawless, so these are most likely new-ish headsets. These could also dip to $229 or $199 within a month or two though.
