I found this Coway Airmega 300 deal online, while looking for an air purifier. I dont know how well it performs, but I like the looks! Is this a good deal?
TL;dr two 5500-2 cost about the same as one Airmega 300 yet offers way more CFM combined and the filters are way cheaper. There is no point in spending $300 on this when $300 spent in 5500-2s while they are on sale would offer a way better bang for your buck with far cheaper operating costs long term.
5500-2 cost around $660 per 5 years to run 24/7; the Airmega cost $1330 per 5 years to run 24/7 on top of being twice as expensive even while on sale.
Just from personal experience, the winix was also garbage for actually detecting when it needed to ramp up. It was in the same area as my kitchen and when smoke alarms were blaring from steak smoke, it was still on its first level while my coway 200 in another room was running at full power. Only after a few minutes, it started to ramp up.
comparing the filters of the coway 200 and winix was night and day. the coway filter was dirty, dusty, and filled with pet hair. the winix had maybe half of it. Returned it to Costco and I'm only buying coway products.
I buy replacement 400s filters on sale for around 65-75 bucks (https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/711736) and they last about 1.5 years (I replace them when the app says to, I'm guessing it just goes by run time). so much less than that estimate. not to mention that I got the 400S for about $350 initially. Come on, idgaf about MSRP, we're on slickdeals.
I get it, you bought something and are trying to defend it against other products. I've tried both, and maybe the Winix was defective, but it didn't work for me and all the coway products I have (I now have one Airmega 400s and 3 Airmega 200Ms) have done a phenomenal job during all the CA wildfires and all the food I burn because Im a terrible cook.
I don't get why you are emphasizing the size and looks of the Airmega 300/400 so much - honestly, the 400S looks sweet in my living room and everyone always is intrigued by it. If you are living in a studio apartment with limited space, then yes, find something that's smaller with a good CFM to size ratio. Just be VERY wary of provided specifications as manufacturers love to fluff up their numbers. To a certain point, physics will limit the amount of CFM based on the size of the unit. Based on my experience, what good is a CFM number if the unit cant even detect PM2.5 quickly and accurately.
I only started the conversation initially saying that the airmegas look better than Winix and you wanted to take it to another level. You do you, man.
I had a similar winix and now have the airmega 400S. Winix is definitely uglier

Super tempting. I've been wanting this or the 400 for a while. I have the 200M but it's okay. Plus this looks better… but I know I don't need it. Thanks for the dilemma OP lol, TU

Winix is an ugly unit and having 2 of them in your house would be even worse
I bought the Coway airmega couple of years ago and i'm very happy with it. The filters are usually $80+ when purchased with discounts from BB&B.

If you think the Conway Air Mega 300 looks any better than the 5500-2, you have bad taste. It's a 22 pound wannabe Xbox Series X with feet.... It's a subwoofer with an identity crisis.
At that points just buy four Merv 14 filters and tape them together and put a lasko fan on top and have a Corsi-Rosenthal Box with equal filtration power for under $100 since you love having a mini-fridge for an air purifier.

I wouldn't call Winix ugly, but I just really like Coway design better. Maybe I will buy one of each? Thanks for letting me know about the 5500-2. Cheers!
