I don't think this is a good value except for maybe the build quality.

It's worth noting though that the new intel alder lake 12th gen stuff is a LOT better than 11th gen, which was a minor improvement over 10th gen.

Even the little 15w alder lake 12th gen chips like the i5-1235u, i7-1255u, etc perform better than the 28w 11th gen stuff like this chip!

And the 28w i5-1240p / ryzen 6800u models even better of course.

https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-com...-i7-1165g7

The 1650 max Q gpu on this Asus laptop also seems to only be maybe half as good as the newer Xe graphics in Alder lake running at like 1/4 the power Smilie

I personally would not buy any older gen stuff right now unless you were on an extreme budget and founds deals on machines for sub $600.

I hate buying computers.

Every cycle they sell you the next generation because it's sooo much better than anything mankind had ever experienced knowing they've got chips in the pipeline that'll make the current ones obsolete.

No matter when you make a purchase it feels like a bad buy within like a year.

Eh just depends. Have to watch for when the big breakthroughs happen. I tend to keep my machines for 7-10yrs and if I see a massive leap forward i'll go for it.
i.e. I just upgrades a 2011 intel macbook (the big sandy bridge leap) to the 2021 M1 Max macbook with the massive M1 leap.

Alder Lake looks like one of the better times to buy compared to the last 10 years with intel, though I suspect the next 5nm and beyond chips will see pretty good jumps as well.

I don't know that I agree with this.
First, this is a 2-in-1 with descrete graphics, which is already a pretty rare machine. I counted only ~15 on the Bestbuy site out of ~200 2-in-1s, and the cheapest of those was $1300.
Second, the only benchmarks I could find that compare 1650 MaxQ with the i7-1255u has the 1650 at about 2x the performance.
1650 MaxQ on GTA V average 122 FPS at normal settings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqPYQUyORqA
i7-1255U seems to get about 50-60 FPS at the same settings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s-ZksXfj4Y
Maybe you know of other benchmarks. Please share if you do.
I agree that the CPU is faster, about 30% according the cpubenchmark. May be important to some, but probably not that big a difference to most.
In short I think this machine is fairly priced. It also has a lot of good reviews, so it appears customers are pleased with their purchase.

You might be right about the gpu - I was having trouble finding good benchmarks. I know the 1650 is considered on the lower end of discrete graphics though. I'd prob trust that gaming comparisons vs. some synthetics I saw that were a little fuzzy.

Lol. This is so wrong on so many levels.

Since when a machine with discreet graphics and 16gb of ram for $800 is a bad deal? You're saying you can buy one like this for $600? Where exactly? On Craigslist?

You point about the older chip makes absolutely no sense either. You'd see no difference in day-to-day performance between the two generations because benchmarks don't mean a whole lot for normal use. I'd rather save a couple of hundred than have the "latest" chip.

This is a slick deal for sure considering it's an Asus and not an Acer and only weighs 4.2 pounds with decent looks.

Remember 15 days to return so run this 24/7 when you first get it. Also be careful how you grab the screen and lift the top up!!!! Hinge is a little stiff!
I have this unit and it is a high-quality unit. Tank quality and heavy!

All quality from all manufacturers has gone down since COVID and supply chain issues. Be careful of where you buy stuff so you can return it easily if it is defective.

One M.2 slot!

Cloned the internal drive to a 2TB M.2 and swapped it out.

Video card is OK for most games but not all.

USB C passes video with no issues.

It is my laptop that will never leave this house.laugh out loudLMAO

Look for ETP1 review as there are pictures of the insides (oldest review).

FYI, this is back in stock at $800.99 on clearance.
I picked this up a week ago as an open box for $650.
I'm not a gamer, but I do like performance for Photoshop, video work, and the hundreds of tabs I like to keep open.
It comes with 3 months of Adobe Creative Cloud, which I pay for already. So that effectively knocked $160 off the price for me.
It's hard to beat Asus for a combination of build quality, performance, and reliability. Maybe someday I'll be able to justify their ProArt laptops.
