There are deals popping up on eBay all the time for 6th and 7th generation Intel CPU desktops with SSD and Windows 10 for less than $100. Seller sent me an offer on eBay item number 394187094679 (search sold items) today for $94.70 shipped, just because I viewed his listing, although it sold since then. It's an Optiplex 5050 SFF, i5-6500, 8GB, 128GB SSD, fresh load of Windows 11.

Check in at eBay regularly and set your search criteria for:

Desktop Computer
Price: less than $100
Sort by: newly listed

Your deal will show up sooner than later. I recently picked up a Dell 3040 SFF ready to go for $60 shipped, and it's a wonderful little machine. Looks brand new as well. And has native 4K HDMI output for my 4K monitor. Good times.

I'm not a server pro, so I'll let someone else answer that part.

As for Windows 11, this desktop is Windows 11 ready and can be upgraded to 11 for free when you're ready. The i3-10105 was launched in March of 2021, so this desktop has a lot of the latest specs.

This will absolutely work as a Plex server. Looking into its capability of 4K --> 1080P transcoding as we speak.

Thanks for the update. Let me know what you find out. I am looking for an inexpensive plex server.

From everything I was reading, it was on the cusp of being able to do a 4K transcode... but to be clear, many people will try to steer you clear of 4K transcoding anyway.

Then I saw this [plex.tv]... they're saying you'd want a CPU with a 17K passmark score to do that. I don't think that's correct, but...

4K transcoding -- especially when dealing with HDR -- is resource intensive and a royal pain.

If my little QNAP 453be NAS with a weak old processor can handle my Plex Server (everything from 4K movies and episodes to shows, music, TV Everywhere -- using a HD HomeRun Prime TV tuner card), then this thing would handle pretty much everything without breaking a sweat.

I've got the 88 celeron and have been very happy with it as a very low wattage linux/terminal server.

Work setup requires VPN with no Local lan access so this computer lets me browse and be productive with to homelab for very little power.

Snappy and responsive for my use-case. I imagine the i3 is a perfectly usable machine for a lot of folks.

Thank you for the input. I would be using this locally, so based on what I am reading it might not even need to be transcoded. If that is the case this is pretty cheap media server. I have not installed Plex before, but purchased a full license. This would be my first. Am I missing anything?

I ordered one to upgrade parents ancient desktop (I don't live near them to know, but it's at least 8 years old). So this should be a nice upgrade. I hope the monitor they have isn't vga only.

Question, should I upgrade the HDD/SDD with more storage? the computer is mostly used for browsing, but some light photo editing also (and storage). I don't think 256gb is enough for all the old stuff I'd have to transfer over from the old computer to the new. AS well as the new photos/videos also to have enough space.

Your parents' HDD out of their old computer may be the answer as a second drive in the new desktop, if they're not planning to reuse the old computer for anything. Loading and saving files might be a little slower, but with the operating system and program files on the 256GB SSD it'll still be very fast for everything else. Plus all their old files are already on the old drive. It could be erased of everything but their files, assigned a drive letter (Likely E or F), and given a name like "Archive", "Media", or "Our Files". Their old drive is almost certainly a SATA, and this computer has an extra SATA port available for this purpose. The best part is, this costs virtually nothing to put in place, and guarantees more storage than they have now.

Edit: Another option is to put their old drive in a cheap external enclosure with USB interface, which doesn't involve opening up the new computer for upgrades. Either way they get to utilize the older hardware for some cost savings.

It's much easier to direct play 4k vs transcoding. Direct Play uses very little resources while transcoding will be very intensive. Transcoding audio if needed isn't bad. Also, hardware transcoding requires you to have a paid Plex Pass; it's not required for software transcoding.

Being played locally doesn't mean direct play, it depends on if your device (smart tv, Roku, ect) can play the files.

This case is small so it's not a good choice if you are trying to fit multiple hard drives.

This is perfect for Plex since it is low power and has a 10th gen i3. What you care about is actually the iGPU that supports Quick Sync. If you pay for Plex Pass you can enable hardware transcoding which gives you great performance. It also sips power vs a setup with a dedicated GPU that will pull a lot more juice.

I changed the $88 one to 16 gb and it works spiffy. It does have an external supply so using any high watt pci card is out. Nice to have these with dvd drives too.

Mr. Jelly summed it up nicely. You shouldn't need to do any transcoding with local playback. If you have huge MKV files or the like, you'll want to have fast connections to everything (preferably hardwire). The good news is that you won't be relying on your INTERNET speeds, but rather your INTRANET speeds. So even if your internet provider doesn't give you a fast connection or your cable modem is antiquated... it's irrelevant for the purposes of playback in your home as it would be your router's capabilities (range and speed) if you're tapping into it via Wi-Fi. Again, hadwire is preferred, but ... that's not possible with phones. Naturally, a fast INTERNET connection is a plus so if you're on the road and want to watch movies... or at your parents' house for the holidays and want to veg on the couch, you can just pull up your collection.

And you're gonna want to get a spinner hard drive. 256GB isn't nearly big enough to run a Plex server AND house the contents. So either add an internal spinner or an external HDD (I'd go for at least 8 TB to make it worth your while)... or a cheap external NAS. Doesn't need much of a processor, if any, as this Acer would be doing the work.

And just my .02? Do some research on SiliconDust Home Run HD adapters. I got a "cable card" from Xfinity. They authorized my cable package to it. I pop it in the adapter... and then get it on my network. Plex recognizes it, scans the channels available to me... and then with Plex Pass, I can watch TV through Plex on the go... and even DVR channels (watch + record up to three channels at a time).

Holler if you have more questions. Smilie

what 1 TB did you go with? I'm going to install windows to the 256 but want a "media drive" I'm not even sure if i need SSD but since i neeed less than a TB not sure its worth going to a spinning drive to save cost

Also, what is the easiest way to do a clean install of Win 11 on this?

Wow thanks everyone for the information. I had purchased Plex as a replacement for the Windows Media Center. I have two of the SiliconDust Home Run devices (2-channel) and had used one to record TV with it. Now it just sits on the net to watch TV from tablets. I am off-air, so I get what is available. I had looked at their 4K TV device, but the stations are not coming to the area for a while.

Most likely I would use external USB drives. Not sure if Plex is smart enough to know a USB drive has been swapped, if it does - fantastic, if not, I need a large external drive. Haven't explored Plex yet.

Again, thanks for all your help.
