There night be a new model coming this fall because several places have this same deal (Best Buy for example). Apple is offering a $50 gift card which they usually don't do unless it's Black Friday.

Rumors point to a newer high end and low end model both being released. The high end model is supposed to have the a14 chip instead of a12 one in this box and I believe an airtag built into the remote

I've had Apple TV 1st and 3rd gen and never use it compared to $25 4K FireStick (80% of the time), $20 ONN Android TV stick (10% of the time), and Chromecast Ultra for Stadia (10% of the time).

I don't even remember the interface. Wasted money on two of them.
I have heard of people getting lucky with ONN media streamers.... that "USED" to be more common.
People getting a hold of a cheap product that performed excellent.

Got the 32GB version on Prime Day and this blows a fire stick out of the water in my experience. Granted, it costs a lot more but it's a much better experience.

I don't have a TV but I do have a spare monitor and I have a Mac. Would this device be helpful for me in terms of being able to use my Mac better (eg, can I use the remote to control the volume on my Mac)?

I assume that I can't watch YouTube videos using the Apple TV. What services does it support?

Price is similar and this can't compete against a micro PC with 8500T+ processor... So much flexibility in Windows pc. I'm running mine in 4k60. ...only mouse needed to do everything.
I can easily route audio to tv, 3.5mm or BT.. Plus YouTube adblock and all chrome goodies

The Shield's upscaling is far better than any other streaming box and probably better than higher end TV's solutions and no you cannot sideload.

The aTV is great because iTunes on it is fantastic quality all around while on other boxes you have to use Movies Anywhere to match the quality (and not all movies are on MA and you cannot rent things there)

Having said that I think the Shield is better because the overall freedom you get with the device. You can sideload, play almost any file, change the launcher if you want, can Cast to it (no AirPlay though which the aTV obviously has), and finally the upscaling is fantastic.

People are gonna say the Shield has ads on the main launcher, which I agree is straight up garbage, but Apple pushes their services on you so hard with their interface and people for some reason don't consider that as "having ads". At least with the shield you can change the launcher
I was an early shield gen 1 and gen 2 plus atv hd and 4k owner, the biggest thing I can say that drives me to choose Apple TV is it just works. Little to no fiddling and little to no compatibility issues etc. also updated fast with new features. Shield has lagged often with android gen updates, android tv has more fiddling and issues as android does. With the added flexibility comes added headaches. If you are in the apple ecosystem already the argument gets stronger for atv too. Also my earlier gen atv is still going strong while my early gen 1 shieldtv has started having more issues.

Only reason I am not buying more atv's now is rumors of a new gen previously delayed and these constant discounts make me hope that is happening soon.

I own the latest Shield and love the AI upscaling feature for <4K content and Nvidia Geforce Now integration. Unfortunately, I have to reboot the thing at least once every week because it hangs, slows down, or has some other weird issue. It bothers me enough to consider switching to an Apple TV since it seems more stable.

What else does the Apple TV do better than the Shield?
I spoke with NVIDIA support yesterday, and they informed me that my shield pro would be replaced.
The same problems exist.
The newest and greatest was the blinking home screen.
I've already done the factory reset twice, and I'm not going to do it again.
If the new one acts like an asshole, I'm going to get rid of it as soon as possible.

I have a PC in the living room and it's rarely used compared to the Apple TV. The controller and interface on the Apple TV is far more convenient than anything the PC has to offer for most functions people have a living room TV for (watching TV, movies, misc videos). It also uses way less power. It's not really competition to an HTPC or PS5, it's true it does lack a web browser (which is unfortunate), but stream boxes are really there for passively watching videos.

It's true you can't block Youtube ads, but if you're using their platform I don't think it's the worst thing ever, you are using their services and they do offer an ad-free plan. More importantly, in comparison to other stream boxes the Apple TV doesn't have any ads on the launch page, which is extremely pleasant. Ads nowadays drive me nuts, and it doesn't make sense to get upset because the product you bought is forcing you to look at garbage. The controller is feels nice for skipping around videos, too.

If you're watching on an expensive TV, IMO it doesn't make sense to skimp so much on the player, it's absolutely worth getting something with more power than a Firestick.

If you have a bunch of HomeKit cameras , the onboard storage is used as a cache before going up to iCloud.

Interesting, I am having the same problems as both of you with my 2017 shield pro. I got an ATV during prime day but told myself the differences weren't great enough to justify the cost (the picture quality was neck and neck imo with the ATV being much warmer), but I have had to reboot my shield daily for the last week because it just refuses to connect to any service.

My other main criticism of the ATV is that the buttons on the remote are not backlit.

yep, the only disadvantage of apple product is the price. Their hardware performance and software/service quality are just far better than competitors.

I think a touch remote for TV is terrible. A few years ago I spent like $140 on the 3rd I think and I tried using mine for a few months and it was just terrible experience. Swiping to change channels was bad experience and once you settle down to watch something the moment you try to put the darn touch remote away, you accidentally touch the touch pad and change channel pr fast forward the movie or whatever the app does.
