Ring does, if you wanted to have any recordings saved (which is where the real value of the product comes from). I believe you can still view live footage without a subscription, but that would mostly be for if you just wanted a remote camera to peek-in on something in real time and aren't worried about storing footage of it.
They just upped the subscription price last month: $4 per month (per camera) or $40 per year (per camera). You can buy a multi-camera subscription ($10-12/month?) For 3+ cameras
I'm assuming blink has a similar subscription required

Thanks OP! Stick Up Cam price matches Amazon Prime Days which works out great for me since I mistakenly ordered the wired version and had to return them!

Does it need subscription?

if i want to be able to see who is at my door, and subscibe for the stored video what pieces will i need
I would look at either the doorbell or the stickup cam, depending on what your uses are. The doorbell is nice since you get a "face view" of whoever is there, but I opted for the stickup cam and put it up towards the ceiling by my door.. the stickup cam covers the full front door/porch area (helpful to see if there are packages, since you might not see them on a doorbell camera), see people (more of an angled/above view than straight on) but also align it to show anything else (like front yard, driveway, etc..)
With a stickup cam I can get coverage of my front door/porch, driveway and patio
I believe to just watch the camera live (like if someone is currently at your door) you don't need a subscription, but to have stored video you'll need at least the basic plan which is $4/month or $40/year per camera
I see some say battery life is 30 days, some say a day. Is it basically a - must also have the solar pad - device?
I have the Ring Stickup Cam and get about 8-10 notifications per day (recording each for about 30 seconds) and do live video feeds a couple times a day (to check for packages), I've had it for about 6 weeks now and it's at exactly 50% right now.
So with that type of use, it will last me 3 months between charges. Charges are a few hours long.
The only time I'd really recommend the solar panel (since it's big and bulky and draws attention) is if you put it in some hard to reach area, like 12 feet up on a roof where you need to pull out a ladder and make a big deal about it to change the battery.
"The company now admits there are "emergency" instances when police can get warrantless access to Ring personal devices without the owner's permission. "
Keep in mind that with the Ring Stick up Camera, you can NOT instal it upside down and rotate the view in the app. It is a stupid limitation Ring has on this particular unit
