No such thing as without much effort in espresso lol. Only trial and error. But you can pull good shots with the gaggia classic pro. Probably the best entry level machine
You can get away with just doing the OPV spring to adjust it to 9 Bars. Also recommend an IMS basket. Those two are the bare minimum and I love the shots I'm able to pull.
Hell of a machine. The only MOD you really need is a 9bar spring and precision basket. Extremely easy to replace. $6 on ebay. Basket is ~$20 on seattle coffee gear.
After that, the quality is phenomenal. You need PID probably only if you drink clean espresso and can actually taste the difference. I use it for milk-based drinks, so I wing it. I didn't understand what "temp surfing" is before I got one. After a couple of months, I do. And it's annoying. And I am really interested in making a gaggiaino. Basically, PID makes sure your water temperature doesn't drop and your espresso is consistent. I just switch steaming mode for 5-10 seconds, purge the steam, pull the shot.
What I would like to have PID for is milk foaming. The temperature/ pressure drops, especially if you're foaming milk for 2 drinks.
I also bought a metal tamper and bottomless portafilter. Latter only for looks and to know if it's you or the grinder who's done wrong.
With this machine, though, freshest coffee matters. I was totally fine with Costco Lavazza bags in a Jura. Here you taste the difference.
