On the other hand, before I bought from Amazon I bought the 72 pack from Sam's BB 3/23 It was terrible -weak stale with no punch at all and I returned it opened.
I noticed the font from Sam's k cups was more round than the good ones from amazon although Sam's picture description does not accurately show that. Also on the boxes: pike place from Sam's says 'Chocolate and toasted nut', while pike place from Amazon says 'notes of cocoa and rich praline'.
Bottom line (if I'm correct and it's not just a coincidence): if you get one that says 'notes of cocoa and rich praline' then you probably have a winner.

If you want more caffeine; the lighter roasts are going to be it.
If you want a bolder taste; you want to get the darker roasts.
The more you roast coffee beans the more caffeine is burned off. I personally prefer the dark roasts (Sumatra) because I feel they have a bit more depth to them.
Coffee is already so old in those cups anyway. I don't find the expiration to make much of a difference.

You are allowed to have an opinion… for me If items are close to expiration then I let Amazon know how close it is and 99% of the time they let me keep it and refund me. If you buy this from local grocery store they would be at least 2 years out from expiring.

fyi: Received a full refund via Amazon chat due to the soon-to-expire date. You will still need to go out and cancel S&S yourself.
But, I will say, I think taste should be the number one priority for the individual. Light roasts to me, feel like watered down coffee or like strong teas.
