Decent price and a decent entry level Japanese knife for someone wanting to start going down that rabbit hole. Looks like Amazon has the same deal so not really slick overall.

Then you should know that this is their entry level, cheaper knife set.

Shun steel is a bit too hard for my taste. Once dulled very hard to bring that edge back. And if I look very closely at the edge it is looks like it has taken a few micro chips. I prefer the Global blend of steel for reasonably priced Asian knifes.

Great comment...but is it better than my Ginsu knife

I was a little skeptical until they threw in the precision steak knives. They really know how to drive a hard bargain.

Did Shun say they were going to pay for shipping?
I believe you pay for return shipping with the processing fees

So you cannot send 3 knives for $15? It is per knife?
Actually, I just found this. [kaiusa.com] It LOOKS like it might be a $15 fee per shipment, rather than per knife, but it's not nearly clear enough, can't say for sure.

If you're complaining about KAI's price to sharpen, maybe you should invest in a Lansky or Sharpmaker.
You can keep these blades razor sharp with 10-20 stokes on a ceramic rod a once or twice a week.
If you're too lazy to do that, I dont know what to tell you other than put on your big boy pants and pay someone else to sharpen.
It's not like this is Maxamet, REX45 or S110V.
Its VG10 which is a breeze to sharpen or reprofile and is not chippy compared to harder steels

That Cuisinart knife is a steaming pile of dog feces masquerading as a san mai steel.

What...are you serious. I paid 6.40 for that knife. Hey money does not grow on trees. Almost the price of gasoline,

It does cut cool whip so not a total loss

I wasn't complaining, I was clarifying. If someone is using "free sharpening" as criteria factored in to the decision to purchase this knife, they should understand that while the sharpening is free, the processing and shipping are not. For those that do not sharpen their own tools (kitchen or otherwise), this might be an issue.

As a woodworker/former luthier, I sharpen my own chisels, tools, and knives using a combination of Japanese water stones and (recently) diamond sharpening plates.

Also, not that it matters for this deal, but KAI will not sharpen serrated blades. I received a Shun Reserve serrated utility knife [knifecenter.com] as a gift a number of years ago, and KAI said they'd hone it but not sharpen it. KAI also makes a less high-end line of knives that were available in Target, Wasabi Black. They're stamped stainless, made in Japan, and they're decent. I got lucky and picked up (insert Goodwill brag here) an 8-piece block set [chefscornerstore.com] at Goodwill, brand new unopened package, for $30. I also got two Nakiris [chefscornerstore.com] unopened for $5 each. They say they're 58HRC, but I have no idea what "graze finish for improved food release" means laugh out loud

What does mean entry level? Does $300 professional level knife 5 times better, 5 times sharper or stay sharp 5 times longer???
It's an "entry level" priced Japanese knife...If you don't know what entry level means, I am really not interested in engaging with you.

I was directed to the Tojiro DP knife here many years ago, and it still amazes me how sharp they are to this day vs every other knife I own. My friends have shun - they chip; wait for a Tojiro sale, and you will know...
