Good 8/07 - 8/13

Seems like good processor even if the screen is only 250nits / NTSC 45%. And for someone who needs/wants a 17 inch screen.

Even tho the online description lists i5-12500H processor, tag on the display counter said I5-1235U. They didn't have a display model, just a placeholder. Staples inventory tag on the box also listed I5-1235U. So I asked the salesclerk to take a look at the box. Reluctantly he went back to the holding cell. Didn't bring out the box, but he snapped a photo of the Asus label on the box . Read i5-12500H

You had me all excited since I'm looking for a 2-in-1. However, in my mind, it's not a true 2-in-1 because it has no touchscreen and can't be used like a tablet. So my search goes on.

It can only lay flat like a book but can't fold over to use as a tablet. You can see the diagram on the asus website where it says "wide open for sharing": https://www.asus.com/Laptops/For-...Gen-Intel/

Please put the name of the store in the title.

At a minimum, you should include the final price (or discount amount), the store's name, as well as brand and model, if applicable."

Sorry. I took the description from the Staples page, and why I questioned it in the posting myself.

4.63 lbs. isn't bad for a 17-incher. I wonder if the RAM is upgradeable? That would be very slick, after so many recent laptops deals for soldered models.

That 8GB is soldered and it has one DDR4 slot where you can put up to 32GB of Ram.

According to ASUS site, memory configurations are:
Memory
8GB DDR4 on board, 4GB DDR4 SO-DIMM
8GB DDR4 on board, 8GB DDR4 SO-DIMM
8GB DDR4 on board

Expansion Slots (includes used)
1x DDR4 SO-DIMM slot

I assume you have the free slot as the first 8GB goes on the board.
Not sure what the max ram is, but seems that 16GB total without a doubt.

Office Depot has a couple of othe configs.
16GB 1TB SSD model (out of stock at this time) $999.99
https://www.officedepot.com/a/pro...S76/#Specs

12GB 256 SSD model $649.99 (until 8/13)

I have been waiting for this laptop to be in stock at my local store, it has been in there sales circular for 3 weeks now on weekly deals, but still does not show any near me for pick up, only one day shipping at $609.00.

I hope it becomes available at my store for the in store price, been looking for a 17 inch laptop with lighted keyboard where the keys are not silver, and I am using an Asus 15.6 inch I bought in 2012, time for an update, this one is getting slow

Some first impressions of the VivoBook and Passmark comparisons versus a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad.
I am just a causal user so with respect to my needs, it looks impressive (17 inch screen). The case I would say is equal to the Thinkpad, but does not have the Trackpoint, and separate Trackpad buttons. Thinkpad top shows fingerprints and seems to have more flex on either side of the trackpad than the Vivobook. Both are 250 nits screens. The Vivo white screens are so much better than the Thinkpad which looks on the greyish side. The Vivo Window splash screen opens up instantly from sleep. The Thinkpad take as much as 4 or 5 secs to get to it. Obviously, there is no beating Thinkpad keyboard but I can't get used to the switching in the palacement of the Fn and CTRL keys on the Thinkpad.

8 GB is serving my needs, but ability to add some extra RAM is a good thing.

I ran the Passmark app on both machines.
Passmark Test VIVIBOOK (Intel i5-12500H 8GB) THINKPAD (AMD Ryzen 7 5825U 24GB)
Rating 2853.0 2585.3 (90%)
CPU 18112.4 11338.3 (62.6%)
2D Graphics 287.2 278.8 (97%)
3D Graphics 1851.4 2138.6 (115%)
Memory 2184 1684.4 (77%)
Disk 13839.8 9982.3 (72%)

I would say the Vivobook cleans up if those above specs mean anything. And the Thinkpad was $300 more. My bad, I went for loading up the Thinkpad for no appearant need, but hoped it would take me into the future.

I reran the test and got completely different results in the opposite slant. Thinkpad coming out considerablly better. So I would disregard test results information. Some drivers were updated on the Vivobook between runs as Windows upgrade keeps running.
Sorry for the spacing. I didn't see there was a table icon originally.

Figured out why the switch on performance. The first runs, the Vivobook was on electric, and the Thinkpad was running on battery. Warned me the results may suffer, but it didn't click at that time.
Ran both on electric this morning, and the Thinkpad surely does beat out the Vivobook.

Just in case it is important to you (as it will not be important for everyone), based on the specs and my experience with a similar laptop (F1502ZA, this one being a F1703ZA), the USB-C port may not support Power Delivery or any other Alt feature.
I got the F1502ZA (15" with an i5-1240P) and did not like it did not support any Alt feature or PD.
If using a docking station is not important to you, then this computer can end up being a good alternative.
