My local Best Buy just told me $290 trade in for my unlocked S21plus, said that's the trade in value. What am I Missing? Do I need a carrier specific phone to trade in?

Question for trade-in pros: do I need to even have activated the phone I want to trade in?

For example, if I were to buy a flip 3 on sale using my Verizon account, do I need to open the box and activate it before trading it in, or can I just hand them the brand new box unopened as a trade-in?
