They take that coupon and apply it first towards new unlocked Sammy phone purchase, then the gift card, and then you make up for any remaining balance.
Apparently, some members here had some real-life experiences of getting a physical GC of the difference, if the trade-in is higher and the phone they chose during the deal is lower.
