Just got back from Best Buy. Traded in S20 FE 5G for S21 FE 5G. After everything, brought home the S21 FE + $92 gift card.
In my case, I had to activate (activate today) the phone on my carrier (T-Mobile) as a device upgrade, otherwise the S21 FE would be priced at $699 instead of $499. Without activation I would have had to pay around $133.

The coupon ($400) expires on Oct 02, 2022. They didn't give the printed out coupon to me, but I took a picture of it.
Just a quick question about activating the phone to your account, does it mean it'll be locked to Tmobile or something? Can you use the device on other carriers? Also, will there be any payment/bill credits associated with the device on your tmobile account?

I am a little bit confused about the 'activate now (upgrade device)' option. I am a Tmobile customer, have an account with them. But I do not want to add a new line, and would like to use a non-tmobile sim on the device that I'm going to purchase. So if I upgrade and add the device to my account, can I simply take my sim off and put in another sim? Since these phone would be unlocked, do I need to do anything? Any advice or insight would be very much appreciated
I didn't do activate now for this offer but previously I did do activate now with Sprint on a unlocked Samsung phone from Best Buy, precisely because it was cheaper than activate later.

What I found was Best Buy sold me the factory unlocked "U1" model with no carrier bloatware, and the activation was like as if BB gave me a Sprint sim and I BYOD the phone to Sprint immediately using that sim. Of course that didn't lock the phone to Sprint and I was able to use any other sim as well even though Sprint had the IMEI registered on one of its lines. If I then use a different phone with that sim maybe Sprint would have complained but some networks don't care. A few days later I cancelled Sprint service through their satisfaction guarantee and threw the sim away.

This is fundamentally different than if BB sold me the carrier-locked model ("U" instead of "U1" after the model number) which would have contained carrier bloat firmware and lock from factory. But I suspect if they advertise the phones as unlocked then they are selling "U1" instead of "U". The S22 Ultra I got today (with activate later) was the factory unlocked "U1".

As for whether there will be bill credits with this promo, my experience was the trade-in is done as a separate transaction to the purchase, and it just gives you a GC + coupon to be applied to the full purchase price of the phone, regardless of which phone you buy or if you were going to do activate now or later. So I think the phone should be regarded as paid off in full from time of purchase, and there shouldn't be bill credits even if you did activate now.

Tl;dr is if you confirm with the agent you are buying a "U1" model and it is paid off in full (I think almost all factory unlocked phones are anyway) then you should be able to do what you want to do.

I haven't used the phone yet, it's still in the box sealed. But I'm pretty sure it's not locked to T-Mobile or any carrier, it's an unlocked phone after all.
There's no payment/bill credit to/from T-Mobile associated with my trade in. Hope this helps.

So does that mean you ended up getting the activate now price without actually paying anything for the carrier? If that is the case, I would like to do it myself too. So should I opt for sprint activate now for a new line and then cancel it later?
also what happens if I don't activate my sprint account at all? how will they charge me?

Yes, but you might incur a hard pull on your credit as they would be opening a postpaid account. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle this time.

Someone previously on this thread mentioned they managed to activate on T-Mobile with a prepaid plan however, but my hunch is they got lucky and it should have been postpaid.

From what I can see only activate now on T-Mobile and AT&T is $100 cheaper right now for S22 and S22 Ultra. Everything else is same price as activate later. You'd have to look at their money back / satisfaction guarantee / return policies.

The agent activates everything before they give the phone to you. To clarify, my Sprint postpaid account and line was fully up and running before I could get out of the store. It was just that due to Sprint's satisfaction guarantee, I could subsequently cancel everything without penalty within the time limit.

Finally did this offer today after work on an S22 Ultra 256GB. Due to mishaps I needed to upgrade my S10+ urgently, and this deal fit the bill. I know some people said the Ultra is a fair bit more expensive than the S22+, but I like the larger screen, S-pen, and extra features. Plus I'll have a higher trade-in value after I'm done with the phone. That might even be this Black Friday if an amazing deal comes along.

Trade-in phone was an "impaired" Note20 I found on eBay a few days ago for $130 excl. tax from one of the larger used phone dealers. Only things wrong with it were missing S-Pen and hardly noticeable screen burn. Locked to xfinity but clean ESN. In fact it was in such good condition I hesitated whether to just keep it as my upgrade and not do the deal. But who can say no to the "profit" if I can trade it in for $800.

Store experience was initially painful. Every agent knew about the promo but nobody knew how to do it except two guys who were of course busy with other customers. Maybe it was just the time of day I went in. Once I got one of them who knew what they were doing, he was very nice and process went smooth.

Some observations:

- I was able to watch the agent's screen throughout. The trade-in workflow looked very similar to the one on the Best Buy website except there's an extra blue banner at the bottom when checking out that reveals a promo code box. Putting in "SAMSUNG" activated the promo on top of the initial trade-in price (same as what gets quoted during online trade-in).

- Note20 trade-in price was $250. The promo adds $50 to that to give $300 issued as a GC and attaches a $500-off purchase coupon to the trade-in receipt. Missing S-Pen and network lock didn't affect the trade, but IMEI was of course entered so not sure if clean ESN mattered. Agent didn't hesitate to choose "unlocked" as the variant even though I told him it was locked to xfinity. Apparently it's just for choosing the "U" model which is the one used for xfinity, US cellular etc. as well as unlocked "U1" phones.

- Purchase coupon says expiry 10/02 but I wouldn't rely on this to mean the trade-in promo to get the coupon expires on that date. Nice agent let me take the coupon home afterwards and I attached it to this post for those who are curious what it looks like. I wish I remembered to ask him when the promo ends.

- Trade-in and purchase were done as two completely separate transactions. In fact the agent did them on different machines. He also emphasized I didn't have to use the GC towards a phone purchase today, but I wondered if that's true for the coupon as well. Maybe you can do the trade-in and just walk out and not buy a phone, and use the coupon later before 10/02. But if the trade-in was greater than the purchase price you should definitely be able to keep the difference in GC as previous posters have said.
Awesome info here. Thanks! From what I'm seeing I believe if one was to do a trade in now and just talk out with the coupon and Gift Card then you're sitting on and saving all of that for whenever prices on the S22 series/Flip4 phones drop again. Wish we knew how long the trade in goes for.

If the rep didn't put in the "SAMSUNG" promo code on the trade-in then it means they didn't even try engaging the promo. The box to put in the promo code only comes up clicking on a blue banner that appears at the bottom of the screen during the trade-in process, ignoring the initial trade-in value and just proceeding to check out.
I love how human beings can just lie so quickly. The BB store dude didn't know how to do the promo so he just BS'es and says it really means UP TO 800 vs 800. Instead of figuring out how to actually do it correctly

It really is obnoxious and endlessly frustrating. The rep who helped me was nice but also didn't know how to do the promo. Kept talking into his communicator earpiece to ask questions. Thankfully the other SDders here posted how to get the promo process to work and I saw that and was able to offer information to the rep to help him along. He was really receptive, if not a bit incredulous ("The promo code is just "Samsung"???).

Have a s20fe and thinking about getting the s21fe.. On paper doesn't seem like a huge upgrade, but it is getting a new phone + gift card by trading in the old phone.. Likely better trade in value next year or whatever as well..

Any downsides to doing this?

Anyone with the s21fe care to comment on their experience with the phone?

Yeah...I mean it is not supposed to be some secret promotion! Obviously Samsung trying to move along inventory....they want us to use the promo code! The bigger question is why this relatively simple process step is not being taught to employees. You would think when they do a big promo like this they would notify the employees and maybe have a little sheet of paper they would put at the desk to explain it rather than just winging it

This is great info.. I am still not clear what do they do to activate an existing line. Reason I am asking is that I have a corporate line which I would not be able to login and anything with it but the number is mine and I can throw into the new unlocked phone and it will work out of the box. When we do activate now, do they need anything from the account or do they just throw in the sim I have today and activate the phone with it? TIA.

You will be asked to provide the last 4 digits of the account holder's SSN/TIN. Also, TM will send you a one-time code on the phone that you're trying to upgrade a device. So, if you don't have this info, I won't try. I am not sure how it works with Corporate accounts, but I presume you won't have all this info.
For personal plans, activate now means you're upgrading a device on the line but fully paying off the device.

Thanks! I have my corp phone with the sim. So getting the code is not an issue. I would not be able to provide the SSN/TIN though Frown So I will have to wait for a deal on an activate later then. Got the S20 FE 5G deal from Woot and trying to make the best out of it.

Can finally post my own experience! S20 FE --> S21 FE + $94 gift card. This was at the Fairlakes location in Fairfax, VA. The rep who helped me was extremely knowledgeable and was able to get me in and out in ~40 minutes, including several interruptions.

Some information: The promo code seems to give you a coupon for $400, which the rep scanned into the system. I was given $200 on a BB gift card which he applied to my order total of $105.99, leaving me with $94 on the card (side note, what can I buy from BB to maximise my savings? Everything seems incredibly overpriced there). Unfortunately no 256GB available, but he was willing to order it. I was just worried about the deal ending or something by the time it arrived, so I opted for the 128GB.

I'm pretty happy, as I had got the S20 FE from a T-Mobile trade in promo on release, where they gave me bill credits for the entire value. I had traded in my $120 Pixel 3. I used the S20 for 2 years almost exactly. Truly a slickdeal, getting paid to "upgrade" your phone Stick Out Tongue

Is the regular S22 worth an upgrade from a note 10+? It's about 3 years old now and figured it would be a good time.
