Usually jump on these Energizer deals, but CR123 batteries are pretty pricey.

Thanks for pointing that out.
I'd much rather not deal with unusual battery sizes. briefly dallied in rechargeable cr123 but it was too much effort for the few devices that use it.
The included batteries are most of the value: looks like energizer 2 pack is $9

Do CR123 batteries have any advantages over AA and AAA?

They are 3V, while you would need 2 AA or AAA to get to 3V. So they're a more compact way to get a 3V device... but for consumers it's a PITA because you're dealling with pricey uncommon batteries rather than ubiquitous AA or AAA.

Good to keep in a car - CR123 are a lot more temperature stable than Lithium. Expensive if for regular use, but great for a glovebox etc.

CR123 batteries are lithium. The CR123 designation denotes a particular form factor, voltage and battery chemestry.

Just go to Ebay and search for:
"Tactical LED Flashlight Military Grade"
Single AA, inexpensive, and works great!

Hard stop at the CR123 batteries. One of the first reviews has a customer that has spent $70 on batteries to walk her dog. Others mention that it eats through batteries. Stay away!!

CR123A batteries can be useful because they have an incredibly wide operating temperature range -- meaning they can be used in extremely cold or extremely hot environments with less issues. Furthermore, CR123A batteries are considered by many to be a "survivor's ultimate tool" due to their lengthy shelf life. CR123A batteries can be safely stockpiled for periods of 10 years while still retaining a significant charge. A lithium-ion battery wouldn't even last half that.
