that is incorrect. i have worked in A/V retail and any item that is returned (even if in a sealed box) is opened and inspected. the item inside is checked against the serial number on the box to confirm the return along with any accessories. so ANYTHING that they receive in return is not sold as new. It could be sold as "OPEN BOX" but it is illegal to sell it as new.

The units that are being sold on woot are brand new, sealed, never used, never sold items.

Is this despite the statement on the listing that says 3 year limited Pioneer warranty?

This is BRAND NEW not refurbished. It is new and comes with 3 year Pioneer warranty (Linked directly on the woot page for this item).
https://www.pioneerhomeusa.com/warranty/

Refurbs only have 1 year warranty (See link above).

I think last time the 305 was on sale, somebody said this had assignable pre-outs that I could use to run to a separate amp to drive my front towers. Can anybody confirm?
for pre-outs you need the next model up VSX-LX-505 or the sister Onkyo model TX-RZ50

Thanks. Thought so. I have a 505 in my man cave and was looking to upgrade my Livingroom receiver. I don't need atmos (even though the 305 can do it) or as many channels, but still wanted pre-outs. Reps incoming.

Got this last go around. I still gotta open and set it up. They shipped it in the factory box with a label on it FYI.
that's for the best. if they pack in a larger box and dont pad it well, it will bounced and slide around in the truck/train/air plane, and could sustain damage in some of the solder joints.

having said, it's probably more likely to get lifted by porch pirates that way if not shipped with a john hancock confirmation

You can also use the Russound adp adapters. Currently running them on my Onkyo 6050. Only using them to drive my front 2 channels and haven't noticed anything different than running it via a receiver with preouts.

those cost about $40 per channel and they only accept wire up to 14AWG. i would have just spent that extra money on a higher model with pre-outs

A single one can accept 2 channels. That's how I'm running them right now. So if you need to drive 3 speakers you need to buy 2. I only need them to drive 2 speakers and a single unit works fine.

As far as 14awg goes it's plenty of my needs. My fronts are only about 8-10 feet away from the amp.

Buying a more expensive unit just to get preouts seems superfluous to me considering I don't need preouts for all channels. If you are running a 7 channel external amp for example then yeah I would agree. But considering the next step up is like 1K+, I would rather just spent the extra 40 instead. But everyone's needs is different.

How is the sound on this? I was looking for a Costco 7.1 receiver deal, but this one might be worth the premium.

this one has Dirac which is the most state of the art correction software you can get anywhere near this price point.

There are different ways to run the Dirac software, but the easiest is to just run it on the app. Plug the mic in the AVR and run it. That way is no more difficult than any other mic calibration system. If someone tells you otherwise, they have no idea what they are talking about. If you decide you want to do a more in depth setup /calibration you have that option too.

if you eventually upgraded to run amps on all channels (9) that would cost about $200 extra. for that difference you could upgrade to a better model with pre-outs included.

wiring all depends on distance. for your fronts a smaller gauge wire may be fine. overheads and surrounds could easily require 50 ft or more per channel.

selling non-new items as new is illegal. period. amazon and woot are huge companies. those actions would result in millions of dollars in fines. unless you have PROOF otherwise then your comments are slanderous and not factual.

And I agree but like I said it depends how many channels your external amp has. Mine is a 2 channel external amp. A good 9 channel amp is like 2-3K if not more. They would probably pony up the cash for a better receiver than what I have anyway.
