As far as 14awg goes it's plenty of my needs. My fronts are only about 8-10 feet away from the amp.
Buying a more expensive unit just to get preouts seems superfluous to me considering I don't need preouts for all channels. If you are running a 7 channel external amp for example then yeah I would agree. But considering the next step up is like 1K+, I would rather just spent the extra 40 instead. But everyone's needs is different.
There are different ways to run the Dirac software, but the easiest is to just run it on the app. Plug the mic in the AVR and run it. That way is no more difficult than any other mic calibration system. If someone tells you otherwise, they have no idea what they are talking about. If you decide you want to do a more in depth setup /calibration you have that option too.

wiring all depends on distance. for your fronts a smaller gauge wire may be fine. overheads and surrounds could easily require 50 ft or more per channel.
