This is a totally unrelated question, not so much about the product itself, but for all products in this category:

Has anyone ever had an issue with the police while transporting bikes using a rack like this? I notice that nearly all of the hitch mount bike racks, regardless of design, all tend to cover the rear license plate entirely.

I know the law is normally that you are not supposed to block your rear plate for any reason but I see people running around with cargo carriers, bike racks, mobility scooter carriers, etc. all the time. Is this just a loosely-enforced law in most places?
I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it blocks your tag and you get pulled over, be polite, tell them you hadn't realized it, thank them for letting you know and you'll fix it. If you get a ticket, google the local law when you get home. If it didn't apply to your situation, go to traffic court and explain to the judge. The problem people get into with the police is when they try to adjudicate the case on the side of the road. Even if they aren't "nice" to you, remain calm and treat them the way you'd want to be treated if you were wearing their uniform and doing their job. You could be the #1 citizen in the community or a serial killer. They have no way of knowing from a brief roadside encounter. Lol.

Wheel mount bike racks are primarily for expensive bikes. You can damage the frame with the hanging type racks. Hanging type racks are suitable for most bikes under 5k new and are 1/3 the cost.
That's a pretty incorrect statement. Mainly for bikes with angled top tubes. Full suspension bikes. Dirt jumpers, bikes that don't mount well on hanging racks. Price does not equal shape.

So true. Also, ever since my daughter upgraded to an adult bike, getting my bike, my wife's, and my daughter's into my hanging rack has been a major chore, each and every time we drive out some place to ride. It's a Thule 4-bike rack but getting three adult bikes onto it and having to finagle things to get them on is taking the joy out of riding.

I've been waiting for a sale on these platform racks for some time. There was a sale on Saris equipment a few weeks ago but I was not sold on their support so I didn't bite. I think this is a great deal and I'm going to jump on this one.

Thanks, OP!
Have you tried a frame bar? We don't need them for our road bikes, but my brother's has a 'compact' geometry and our mountain bikes have severely sloping down tubes. The frame bar keeps everything level, making it much easier to fit four bike on our Yakima Full Tilt

Nice find! Our 2 ebikes weigh about 100 lb total. Good reviews on that one! It's more in our budget.

Both are solid bike racks but the Kuat is much lighter. I had the Kuat Sherpa but sold it due to not being able to extend to 4 bikes. I got the Thule with the add on for 4 bikes used. It is heavy as hell. Get the Kuat Nv if you plan on getting the add on. Another reason I sold my Kuat was because it doesn't work with kids bikes natively. You have to buy an adapter so that it can secure the smaller bike in place. The Thule doesn't need an adapter for smaller bikes. My kid had a Woom 3 bike for reference. If your vehicle has low ground clearance, I do not recommend either bike rack if going with a 4 bike setup. Mine scrapes the floor every time I go up or down my driveway.

Thanks that's super helpful! I did plan to get the extension and I will have kids bikes too.

If you're in the market for a platform rack in this range, also consider the RockyMounts Westslope, or Westlope 3 if you need to bring 3 bikes. We use the Westslope 3 and it works great for the most part. Weighs less than a comparable Thule. It has an upward curve to the hitch tube for better clearance, but may interfere with the hatch opening on some cars.

Loosey enforced in most places. Some rack companies sell brackets that let you mount a plate on your rack if you are worried about it.

How come? I have this and was thinking of selling it and getting a 1up - mostly because I want the 1-bike rack so I can access the hatch of my car and not be putting the rack on and off all the time.

Does it come with locks? I recently actually have bikes that I'd care if they were stolen or not. Also how easy is it to remove the whole thing?
It doesn't come with locks itself, you have to purchase them separately and install them.

You can lock the front wheel
