Lol you are going by specs?..have you seen the TVs side by side?. I have and trust me the sony looks better. In a all white screen the white does look brighter than the sony but when you are actually playing content the sony looks brighter.
Too expensive as in the A95K? yes
Overrated? no
The Sony brand is definitely NOT what it used to be.... whether the Sony Tax is worth paying is up to the individual.
The "ONLY" Sony TVs worth buying are their OLED TVs.

Attended 5 Vegas CES where I meet Michael Desjardin, Lee Neikirk, David Katzmaier and Caleb Denison.
I attended the seminar in which Jonghee Han announced his baby: The Wall Modular MicroLED Display BUT you know better... what are your credentials??
( Except being an armchair quarterback... that is....)
Let me wipe my slate clean and let you enlighten/teach me.
* I should just stop commenting on TVs. I have had quite a few intelligent conversations BUT also too many comments from unqualified, lame-brain know-it-alls that suffer from diarrhea of the mouth. I can write a book containing all the idiot comments that I received here at SD

People always forget that while Sony (excluding Master Series) are a few hundred bucks more they actually have to source these panels from LG and Samsung, they also usually source the better panels leading to less chance of banding etc. There are also less reports of Sony oleds getting burn in because they simply have better engineers and drive the panels better than LG. If you frequent AVS you will now see reports of S95B (on conservative firmware) with burn in already, lets see when/if we will see the the same thing with the A95K.
The idea of bang for the buck is situational depending on what you are looking for brightness? Black levels? How do these play out while watching content? David Katzmaier has always been a black levels and bang for your buck guy and I've always followed his recommendations in the past. Coming from Panasonic plasma I was a vizio guy telling people how great the contrast was due to diming zones ignoring the poor shadow detail, processing, motion, inaccurate colors, blooming, trailing, noise and poor build. I then obviously moved on to Hisense and TCL at the promise of budget with black levels and color only to find panel lottery added to the above issues.
If i told you how many TVs I've been through since this is a hobby of sorts you would be surprised until i finally a got Sony 900E, then A9F, then A9G etc with some LGs and Samsung sprinkled in between. Sony strikes that balance in presentation with excellent build quality and the least reported panel lottery, have i seen calibrated TCL? yes and they look great but they do have their own set of issues i cant bother to deal with again.
Edit: it should be noted I'm not counting any tv manufacturer out, tech improves every year as well as the skill of the engineering team, if a tv is great ill call it as such.

What a e-waste. Attending CES where you hear marketing spiels makes you qualified. Yeah go on bra, comment on if that makes you feel better about yourself on the internets.

OK, you own/owned
The Sony X900E, an excellent model, was followed by the X900F which is considered marginally better. It is brighter with improved local dimming BUT the contrast ratio was lowered?
X900E: Native Contrast 5,411 : 1 W/ local dimming 6,534 : 1
X900F: Native Contrast 5,089 : 1 W/ local dimming 5,725 : 1
The X950G was a downgraded model. The X-Wide Angle layer severely lowered contrast ratio and diminished brightness.
X90J & X95J were in the upswing but then came the X90H.
Currently we're up to the X90K
My point.... models are supposed to be improved on and not downgraded or squelched.
*The X800G a hot piece of ..... not worth the Sony moniker. Back when Sony was King of The Hill, it would have never allowed its name on that monstrosity.
IF you believe that current Sony LED TVs are worth buying... more power to you.
You have a right to your opinion.

The 900 and 90 series are not Sony's flagships and sit in the low premium category, the 950 was the step up with Master Series being the flagship, many however keep comparing the 900 and 90 series to Samsung Q9 and LG oleds. It should be noted as well that right after the 900E Sony started to tune for a more natural look, however this is not the case with the XR chips which are insanely good and better than anything on the market currently.
The 800G was a budget set with IPS panel so of course it wasn't going to measure high contrast, why does Samsung, LG etc get a pass for their IPS and ADS panels but not Sony? also it should be noted those brands have premium lines with the same ips panels some costing more than the x90K.
Again i will say if you go for pure raw specs and performance in areas such as brightness, dimming zones or even gaming features no doubt TCL and Hisense will take the win, for me its quality control, video processing, somewhat accurate color OOTB and motion processing, not everyone has access to exclusively 4K content and with lower quality content and cable boxes Sony remains the best, for now at least.
