Oh damn…thinking hard about this if we actually have one in stock the SF Bay Area, have an old Traeger that came from Costco that I turned into a pizza oven, a recteq and a rusty ole Weber. How to justify to wife…
A real man does what he wants. If your wife leaves you for buying a new smoker than she never loved you. Be a man!

I am curious and interested about this grill. How hot can the grill get. How long does it take to get hot. I am spoiled by my infrared thinking charbroil gas grill with those flare blocking plates

The one from Walmart includes the griddle pan and manifold vs Costco which does not. I did a bunch of research before when Costco had theirs on sale for $499 a month and a half back. I believe if you purchased the griddle pan and smoker separately this would come out to the same deal Walmart just had (which I bought then)
The griddle pan isn't available anywhere in stock from what ive been looking at...

The grill is 250+ pounds so if they aren't aware of Costco's lifetime policy for anything non-electronic, then the 1 year warranty could be a deal breaker. Nobody wants to have a 250 pound outdoor paper weight after 1 year lol.
Google search says this is 204 lbs. maybe a bit closer to 250 with packaging materials.

Yes, you either mix in some wood chunks every few inches of the charcoal or add them in the bottom. I did the mix in method and got great smoke. As compared to pellets, this gives you the taste of real smokers with charcoal and real wood. But also gives you the ease of pellets where you can maintain same heat for many hours. The app seems to work, not great app but does the job.
Do you do lump or briquettes?

I used briquettes as I loaded it with that to preseason the grill. I also had some around. I bought lump coal and will try that also. I am still experimenting around with different meats and cooking styles. I did Korean style sliced short ribs last night and they were awesome. I smoked for about 40 minutes at 200. Kicked the bbq up 500, tossed the ribs in Korean bbq sauce, and quickly crisped up the outsides. Best flavor short ribs ever for me.

Grill can get up to 700, supposed to take 13 minutes according to the manual. The controls allow you choose a temperature between 150 - 700

Back from Costco... I'm going to sit back to see if it drops in price, cook surface seems really small to me. At most, I can see using the base and the third level, using all 3 tiers looks tight to me. Also another negative thing for me is the warranty is only 1 year... peace of mind I would like to have seen this at 3 years.
The parts are easy to replace and pretty cheap though, there is no auger or motor to worry about. It's basically just a controller and a few switches. The switches you can also just bypass if you want.

PSA: A major draw of the 800 is the griddle. This costco SKU does not come with the griddle or the manifold for it!

The ad states as much "Flat Top Griddle Insert Not Included" - but if you're like me and see the "800 model" - you might accidentally purchase it not reading the details (since you're already very familiar with the 800 model, which in every other instance, includes the griddle.).

Smokes better than a pellet? Can you use wood on this grill? Not sarcasm, genuinely don't know. From the description it sounds like a charcoal grill that functions like a pellet smoker.
You sure can, I've seen peopke putting nothing but splits in it. Temp. Control might not be quite as good though, I dunno. Most people just mix charcoal and wood chunks.

It usually takes me about 10 minutes before I'm ready to grill from the time I light it up, just using cheap charcoal starter squares. It heats up extremely fast.

Just picked one up in Danville, CA with 5 more left.

You can call their general Warehouse Customer Service # 1-800-774-2678 to check if any of your local Costco has it in stock (Item 2127148) and they also can confirm if they are on sale. Prices vary depending upon the warehouse location.

After watching many YouTube videos between the MB 800 vs the Char-griller 980, couldn't pass up on this great price!

FYI Here's my summary of Pros (+)/Cons (-) between the two....

Masterbuilt 800:
+ Quick even temps
+ INTERNET APP - control anywhere
+ temp range 150-700F ; good for smoke salmon 160F
+ Better Fan design; Better Smoke?
- Less quality parts?
- Grease draining issues can cause flare ups if not regularly cleaned

Char-Griller 980:
+ Better quality design
+ Better grease drains reducing flare ups
- Takes longer to reach Temp 30-45min for stable temps
- LOCAL INET ONLY APP Control - home only
- Bad Fan design for high heat and wood chunks in basket; Less Smoke? and Flap damage
- temp range 200-700F ; NOT good for smoke salmon 160F

Happy Smoking! Wink

If I didn't have a grand invested in a Grilla grill, I would seriously consider this. A pellet smoker just doesn't have the great flavor of charcoal. Not even close.
