I hate buying electronics from Amazon if I have a choice. I often seem to get items that look be open box rather than new.

Not worth it for $500 difference. Just buy ext TB4 SSD or use SD card for storing pics and vids.

Dumb argument. Will your Mac cease to work if it's not updated to the newest software?. Even my 2017 iMac is updated to the newest macOS, Ventura. Even older ones that are not, they are still perfectly usable and will get 2-3 years of security patches, per apple.

Actually the "life" of a computer is quite subjective. You can take a Mac that won't run the latest MacOS and turn it in to a Chromebook, run Linux on it, or Windows if you wish. Latest versions of each depending on the machine. You can take an older Windows laptop and run ChromeOS or Linux on it, often latest versions. You can do a lot of things with older hardware, it just depends on skill level and your tolerance for an OS you may not be familiar with or isn't as easy to use.

However, Apple generally supports their own hardware much longer than others, including iPhones. I know there's been some issues with the battery usage dropping performance on iPhones, and if there's truth to that, it's pretty shady. But on the computer side I will say that in my experience working in K-12, we almost always got 8-10 years out of Macs, and maybe 5-7 from PCs. Sometimes the numbers still make the PCs cheaper, but in my humble opinion, buying a Mac, if you don't mind using MacOS will be cheaper in the long run. But I won't be negative against one or the other. You gotta use what you like and works for your use cases.

I've got an M1 Air 8/256 and I'm seriously considering upgrading to this. I've been wanting a bigger screen and I for one enjoy MacOS and the performance of the M1 processors.

Also just fyi not sure how it is in other states but NJ has back to school tax holiday so if you buy this now with NJ shipped address you pay no tax

actually, you can just use this adapter and buy your own mSD card. I have this and it fits the 14" Pro. The write speed tops off around 85 MB/s w/ my Evo mSD.

Operating System will usually run 8-9 years. Considering that, it's well worth the investment

I got 9 years of updates with my 2012 macbook pro, and even though it doesn't support Monterrey, it still works great

Lol smh just missed my return window at Apple for the BTS deal on a binned 14/8 with 1TB upgrade. Would have definitely done this instead. Oh well, should have waited. Anyone on the fence, definitely pick up the 512GB, that's a steal of a deal.

To be fair, The 1 TB (non-custom) version does come w/ better CPU/GPU than the 512GB version.

I still use a 2011 iMac for quite a few things and I still get security patches from time to time. I mean I have newer ones too, but if you are not an idiot to begin with you really don't have to worry that much.
