Nowadays, with their in-house M1 series SoCs, that's different. At the base level, MBP 14 still gets a cheaper SoC, in addition to the smaller screen, battery, etc. and other missing features. Both get 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM standard. But you can option an MBP 14 to have the same SoC and RAM as an MBP 16. At that point, 14 to 16 is only a $200 difference. So $300 of the difference is the cheaper chip.
Prices below at full list price for each upgrade step.
MBP 14 | 8-core CPU | 14-core GPU | $1999
MBP 14 | 10-core CPU | 14-core GPU | $2199 | +$200
MBP 14 | 10-core CPU | 16-core GPU | $2299 | +$100
MBP 16 | 10-core CPU | 16-core GPU | $2499 | +$200
Hope that makes sense. Basically, MBP 16 forces you to upgrade the SoC in addition to the size upgrades and other features you get. Whether that's worth $500 to you or not, that's your call.
Keep in mind that RTX 3050 does not have AV1 hardware encode. If that is a priority, I would go with Intel Arc series GPU. My personal favorite is https://www.bestbuy.com/site/leno...Id=65022
The last one from Best Buy was on sale for 1299 few weeks ago. I am patiently waiting for that to drop around $1200 and that would be my next laptop
