Available retailers:About this title:
  • Author: Emily St. John Mandel
  • Page Length: 353 pages
  • Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.
  • Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band's existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.

Rare scenario where I thought the show was better than the book (I read the book before the show). Still worth a read.

Actually just finished the show about an hour ago and loved it. For $2 I'll try this, but damn my hopes were really high because of the series.

Hmm, I agree that the book is rather boring. Nice writing but slow and a bit unsatisfying. I would still say it's worth a read — just do so quickly.

I enjoyed the show. I've heard those that liked the book, did not enjoy the liberties taken by the show. I guess I'll find out soon if the inverse is true. Thanks for the post.

I hate that they changed the city the book was based on in the show

I had it in my Kindle library pre-pandemic, but didn't get around to reading it until mid-2020. I liked both, but I preferred the book.

I enjoyed the book just as much as the show(watched the show first). That said stories are VERY different from each other in what they focus on. It's a good book, hope you enjoy it.

Good deal. I enjoyed the book. If you like book club style books and enjoy books about books and culture with a post-apocalypse spin, give it a shot.

I feel like I liked the book and did not really have the desire to finish the show. I just could not get into it. I can't really say why though.
