Amazon Subscribe & Save favoring credit over gift card balance?

Amazon
Maybe it's just me, but I swear there's no way any longer to have your gift card balance (if sufficient) used automatically before your credit card is...for S&S orders.
That only works consistently for non S&S orders.
Before about two years ago Amazon never had this seeming bug. All orders, S&S or not, could be set to reliably and automatically "Yes, use my gift card balance." There's seemingly even a master setting for it here [amazon.com]. Yet, even when set there, when you create a S&S subscription there is no mention of the GC balance on the order page. The credit card will be used.
While it is true that after you place a S&S order you can go back in an edit it to tell it to use the GC balance, and it says that it's successful, sometimes it really isn't and of course you only find out about that when it's too late. I've seen that happen multiple times over the last few years.

I scoured the web for posts when this happened on my orders but only found a few reddit discussions talking about it. I think more are noticing it now.
