I'm a big fan of the Sterling line. I like it as much or better than anything in Fender's Squier line. In some ways I like it better than Fender's Player Stratocaster (locking tuners, roasted maple neck, truss rod access), which is considerably more expensive.

Although it's made in Indonesia, my understanding is that the Sterling line goes through an additional QC check and setup in Music Man's California facility. (Please correct me in the comments if this is incorrect.)

One possible deal-breaker is that the neck has a 12" radius, which is found on some Stratocaster models (currently the Player Plus off the top of my head), but most Strats and Strat-like guitars use a smaller radius. Depending on what you like and what you're used to, the neck could feel big to you.

At $400, this is a guitar the beginners can hang onto for a long time. It can even serve intermediate and advanced players well as a beater guitar.

Also same price on musician's friend. Both are the same company but you get 8% back in points.

I have played these before, AWESOME guitars! The feel of the neck is what makes a guitar for me, and these feel like butter. Very fast and easy to play.

I'm intrigued...been looking at used Players at ~$550 or so. I can't quite figure out the naming scheme though; I want an SSS, and preferably black. I saw what seemed like the same "line" (Cutlass, Music Man, Sterling, in some permutation) but it didn't have locking tuners.

Just trying to figure out what the name of this particular make/model/line is so I can see if there's other colors/configurations. Why is this one different? https://www.guitarcenter.com/Ster...4230+30144

I believe that's an older Cutlass CT30. The confusion is totally understandable and is all on Guitar Center. For whatever reason, Guitar Center uses different naming conventions for guitars within the same brand and sometimes even within the same line. It has multiple listings for Cutlass CT50; some use CT50 and some don't, even though it's the same model but with different fingerboard and paint options.

Just got my new Sterling by Music Man by Martin. If you've ever ordered a new Non-Martin guitar from mf or gc you'll understand the reference (to the box and the usedness of the new)…
