Hi Mom and Dad, I'm all grown up now and I've had a whole life outside this house, but times are tough out there and we got foreclosed on and now we have to live here again.

No politics this time, but all the same dysfunction you grew to love when we lived across the street. Let the party begin.

I have tried to get out of GA, got several interviews over the last few years, but no offers. That being said, I actually just took a new position at my current university as assistant chair of my department so it looks like I'm going to be stuck in GA long term now. laugh out loud

There actually is a pension plan here but I opted for the 403(b) instead. I don't want to have to rely on the state to survive in retirement. With the 403(b) once they put the money from the employer match into the account, it becomes MY money. Wink

Pension is also yours when you become vested, but yes, you are dependent on the pension finance people to not ruin things...

Right about the time that I was having to decide if I wanted the pension plan or the 403(b) the city of Detroit declared bankruptcy and was allowed to renegotiate all of their pension obligations by the bankruptcy court. Now I'm not saying it would happen to GA, but I decided I would sleep much better knowing that no one could ever take a penny of that money away from me once I retired.
