So people nowadays use a headphone to experience movies in their darkened home theater setup? A mere soundbar too?

lol ...

I have a bro-in-law that swears his soundbar is "amazing surround sound"; nobody has the heart to tell him he's serving mcdonalds and swearing it's wagyu. I guess everyone has their own opinion on what constitutes "good enough" vs "incredible" but when I plop people down in front of even my slightly-better-than-mediocre 10yr old Yamaha's 5.1 setup (Polks & HSU sub), most jaws drop.

Of course soundbars are easier. Of course wireless is easier. It was a PITA running wires through exterior walls! When it comes to audio, there will always be a consumer striving for "great", often after evolving through a series of "good enoughs" ... you can find their old soundbars on craigslist or the dump.

People who actually care about an immersive home theater experience. F*** a sound bar.

If you're OK with not having DIRAC, then this is the receiver to get. Not much comes close in this price range, and it has 40 gbps hdmi 2.1. I ordered the Monolith 16" sub and the THX-365T speakers for L and R fronts, and I'm tempted to get this....

I wish there was a deal on the LX-505.

Who the heck buys these big box home theater electronics anymore? I'd like to see the industry sales data. I would bet that sales for A/V receivers have been declining or stagnant for years.
Me I guess. I am finally upgrading from my old Onkyo 7.1 receiver, Energy Take 5.1 speakers and my Polk PSW10 sub. New receivers have wifi, bluetooth, better room correction software, atmos, and lots of music and streaming software built in.

Out of curiosity, what type of home theater setup are you running?

We bought two 🤷. One for the living room theater + Atmos/ living & kitchen zone 2 for background music, one for master bedroom + zone 2 master bath. Remote play using Spotify and other streaming services makes it amazing for our use case.

Some of those features are redundant. These products had their hay day in the 1990s. These days consumers looking to upgrade their experience beyond the TV speakers opt for a soundbar. For music listeners a pair of powered bookshelf speakers is the popular option.

I sold my A/V receiver several years ago. It was collecting dust. I prefer the headphone experience.

I watch and listen to the morning news in 5.1.2.... once I got used to Atmos setup, everything streams in full surround.

While soundbars are convenient and simple, they are nowhere near what surround speakers provide.

I get your point, but I would never settle for a soundbar. I love my HT setup! (My 5-year-old HT setup still runs great: Onkyo RZ-720, Martin Logan surrounds, LG B7 OLED, Panasonic UB-820, with a high-end PC connected along with a fire stick 4k max. I'm happy!)

What's the real watts RMS per channel on this? I have a Marantz that's going out and it's got 100 per channel.

Pretty sure you will need some equipment like a RMS voltage meter and a scope to really know. I don't think anyone has taken the time to do that for this reciever.
