My case: I have iPhoneX that I got new from craigslist and used with ATT for 2-3 years. When I go to ATT site to unlock the phone it says that this phone has a pending installment plan and hence cannot unlock it. My guess is that it should be from the guy who sold the phone to me and ditched ATT without paying.
Question is: can I use this phone for trade-in?
I would have prefer an unlock phone too but if cheap enough and works for my purpose its fine.

It will be just like this deal here. You trade in an iPhone that is worth the $1000 credit and they give you your iPhone 14 pro. As long as they don't cancel the line they are fine. They are not actually paying for phone unless they cancel the line. Besides your trade in of course.

Yes. An iPhone purchased from apple.com is unlocked. Once your new iPhone is activated, it remains unlocked, which means you can use it with any network that provides service for iPhone. The exception is when you buy an iPhone with an AT&T Installment Plan. It will be locked to AT&T and will only work on the AT&T network for the term of your Installment Plan agreement.
