I have three of these TVs, it is an excellent TV and any this is a fantastic price.

Never had issues with any of them on random restarts.

The blacks are very good, VERY good, no it will never match OLED but you are also paying sub $2k.

IMO Sony is superior to Samsung and LG.

Purchased this model open box excellent, at Best Buy in May 2022 ($1249) Coming from a 65" LG CX, I would never go back.

The 85" is massive in our media room and the picture quality is superb. Using with a home theater PC and RTX 3080, full 4k120hz Plus VRR looks incredible for gaming.

I've owned a ton of TVs over the years (thanks to Slickdeals addiction and bad financial management), and this one is the one that I get the most jaw dropping compliments on from friends and guests at our house.

I'm looking to upgrade my Samsung QF6 from 2018 because the HDR seems pretty dark on it at times. Rtings gave it a 7.0 for "HDR Brightness", but gave this Sony a 6.8. How is HDR content on this Sony? Should I hold out for something with a higher rating for HDR brightness?

Its does I have the 70" inch unit and it just random restarts. I've done all software updates and restored back to factory settings... It still just randomly restarts. It sucks especially during movies and sporting events.
This model only comes in 85". You have a different tv

Surprisingly the X91J, X91CJ (and only these models alone) have the best black level/uniformity of Sony's entire LED lineup so far.
I had one for a couple months. Blacks are blacks but lots of DSE on my set.

Local dimming isn't good. Lots of blooming in dark scenes.

Reflections and glare were an issue in my moderately bright room.

Judder still apparent after latest firmware.

Had a few Wi-Fi drop outs after update.

Wired Ethernet is slow old tech.

Random crashes after update

No xr processing although the x1 is quite good

No 4k 120hz if that matters to you

No LD with vrr as advertised.

I paid 1500 with Costco after a cash card glitch. I still returned it at that price.

The remote size and number of buttons are extremely unnecessary

Good luck with your panel uniformity. Rtings rated their panel high while I feel mine was more of a 7

With that said, I'm getting an x90k soon

I just spent 2 weeks researching 85" TVs. This was one of the TVs I was considering. While it is full array local dimming, it is not mini-LED. The x95 is Sony's first mini-LED TV and is much more expensive. We auditioned this side-by-side with the Samsung QN90B (mini-LED). For bright rooms, the Samsung looked better to my eye as it's peak brightness was notably higher. The increased lighting zones/processing controlled the blooming for dark rooms a lot better. The direct competitor to this TV would be the X80, which we didn't really consider. This seems like as good of a value as I've seen for an 85" though. The internet darling Hisense and TCL's don't have 85" sizes.

We ended up talking ourselves into the 83" LG C2 OLED for $3900at ABC Warehouse (great deal, C2 for the price of a C1). The picture quality difference was easily noticeable by my wife, and was within our budget. We have a dedicated home theater with full lighting control, so the OLED made sense for us. It's replacing an Optoma UHD60 on a 92" screen where the 4k input stopped working (again).

I prefer the 85" QN90A to this by a mile for $1900

I bought one. $1800 for a 120hz 85" display is an absurdly good deal. Would I rather have the 85" QN90A at $2000 with the EPP discount? Sure but it's sold out.

Will we see 80ish OLED in 3k range before the end of this year?

X80j/k does not have local dimming. I would say this street is a step below the x90k if you can get past the idea of older x1 processor.

This screen cannot produce 4k120hz. It has the same issue as the x900h which is basically the same tv. The qn90a is a good screen but if you're aiming for color accuracy and a local dimming that doesn't smear colors then steer clear of the qn90a. I don't know if the qn90b has the same local dimming as qn90a but the B version isn't worth the price tag right now

This TV has been $2k+ for a long time until a few months ago Costco had sub $2K deals w/ 5 yr warranty and GC (That's when I got it to accompany my PS5). Some local warehouse has ~$1800.

If you want quality Samsung/Sony 85" OLED to drop below $2k, it's going to take a while. Maybe 6-12m or more. I'd say go for it if you've been searching for 85" TV for some time. You are going to be happy with this TV. Gaming, movies, sports, sounds...etc, basically above average in all categories.

If you're picky about dark area needs to be extremely black, need a wide viewing angle, or dislike plastic legs (note the depth of the leg, you'll need a deep TV stand if you're not mounting it to the wall), then this TV may not be the best you.

I heard this particular model got a carryover of older gen processors rather than newer gen processors in other 2021 models.

If so, still seems like a decent deal for the size but something to look into as Sony processing evolved substantially last couple years, and it can make a huge difference in ultimate real-world viewing experience. And, seems sites like RTINGS don't properly test processing, they leave most features off for their panel testing. Only a small subset of today's content is 4k HDR so it's really important for watching lower quality sources.

What do you mean it can't produce 4k120hz? It says it can here - https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x91j I will return it if you're right.
