It requires 9 channel receiver..
Here is the proper placement layout & keep in mind you will pay a lot more for the receiver to run this.
Not sure the end result will be worth it.

Even at 5.2.1 this will be far superior to any Soundbar in it's price range…. even factoring in the amp. As many have mentioned, this is wonderful entry point to proper home theater and hi-fi.

My TV room is not big. its small area, is it fine to have this setup or better to go with a sound bar? This deal seems budget friendly to me. I don't have any receiver. Primary use is to use with TV. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Not super budget friendly, no. You need a receiver to power these. And probably speaker mounts. And wire. And banana plugs if you value the ability to easily plug/unplug (like for dusting). And the labor to install everything, which likely includes cutting drywall, fishing, patching, sanding, and painting.

Personally I use speakers like this for my family room home theater setup and soundbars with wireless sub/rears for small rooms/bedrooms where space and convenience are at a premium for me.

I'm not super familiar with this particular set of speakers but my guess is gonna be that you use these until you replace them piece by piece (or pair by pair). If you're already cutting drywall then I'd probably run atmos wires to the appropriate ceiling spots as well in case you want to add downfiring atmos rather than these which fire up, and the sound bounces back down.

Just the 5.1 setup is 299 on Amazon. I picked that up as I'm also vaulted and a one way vault so the upward firing speaker wouldn't work for me

With receiver it's more pricey.. Sonia sound bar is super good for that price range

I agree this will perform better than most soundbars, but the sound quality is not the main reason for buying a sound bar. It is convenience. Most soundbars are very straightforward to set up and have wireless components. This requires buying a receiver, whereas a soundbar is a plug-and-play.

Factoring in the cost of a 9.2 channel receiver, this will explode in price to over $1400. Sure, you can get a 7-ch receiver at half the cost, but then you are kinda losing out on making the most of these speakers.

Tempting. I bet this beats the pants off the 5.1.4 Samsung soundbar system I just pieced together from Amazon warehouse deals and z eBay (paid 254 for the 3.1.2 soundbar and sub and 175 for the rear speakers w/ atmos up firing channels. But still need a 9 channel receiver which is what… $800? At least?

At least. But typically, you would want one with HDMI 2.1, which drives it up even further.

I tested Jamos atmos setup (s809) with a 7-channel receiver. It sounded really good overall. But wires were a mess. I don't have a couch to hide wires, so they were on the carpet for the rear speakers. I got the Samsung Q990B as it had great reviews, and I am surprised at how good it sounds. Besides the stereo soundstage, the surround sound performance is better than the Jamos setup. Although, when comparing music playback, the soundbar does not hold a candle to it.

With the soundbar, the wires are gone for the rear speakers, and it costs less overall while taking up less space.

Been running these speakers now for about a month in a 5.1.2 setup. Like another poster said, if I feel like dropping the coin for a 9-channel receiver, I'll run 2 more wires through the attic and have those rear upfiring speakers...well, firing up.

Until then it's a huuuuuge improvement from my Onkyo 7.1 HTIAB setup from a decade ago. Fantastic, deep, rich, sound, and you'll be hard pressed to do better for less. Plus, there's the Costco return policy....

Be forewarned, it's a giant box, and quite heavy. And do not use the crappy 24awg wire included in the box. Buy decent 14 or 16 gauge wire [monoprice.com] separately. I went with 12awg because there are some long runs needed for my setup, and while it's technically larger than the "maximum" wire gauge recommended, it still fits.

I also used these speaker mounts [monoprice.com] from Monoprice. 2 sets will only cost you 22 bucks + shipping. Solid mounts, a bit of a PITA for dial in, though.

Oh, and if you use the speaker mounts I linked, and you're mounting them on drywall (with no studding behind) do not use the garbage anchors included. While the mounts are rated up to 22lbs, and an individual speaker is about 8.5lbs, the anchor is probably rated for about 3-4lbs, tops.

Ask me how I know.

Buy some decent anchors or toggle bolts from HD or Lowe's. Trust me...

Ok I have klipsch speakers in 1 room and a soundbar in another. The biggest thing to consider is form factor or size... if you don't have room then speakers sitting around are just not an option without work and creativity. Next, if you have the room then do you want the superior sound? No soundbar is going to touch this many speakers plus a sub... it just isn't happening.

Finally is price, you'll need to buy a receiver in addition to the speakers.

Setting up speakers is actually very easy and it only gets complicated when you start trying to hide them... good luck.

could you just use these speakers in a 5.2 setup? I have vaulted ceilings so Atmos is out.
I would recommend just getting height speakers like the r41-sa for vaulted ceilings.

It was over 11 years ago. Why would anyone's mileage vary, based on this acquisition?

Also, I had no idea that they were acquired by Audiovox. What a steal @ $166M.
