If you don't need it asap, just wait
The 850 had the older BiCS4 96L TLC NAND. The X uses the newer BiCS 5 112 layer TLC to better compete with the Micron 176 layer NAND used by competitors and stay on top as one of the fastest.

The controller is a newer version tweaked for the new NAND. I don't think the controller hardware has changed though.

Not the same, the one posted by OP is 850X and has heatsink not 850 as in this best buy link.

Have things changed? Are more layers actually a good thing now? Is the drive able to access them simultaneously?

Should I jump on this now? Or wait for BF?
Definitely wait.
TrendForce expects consumer SSD prices to drop up to 8% in the coming quarter due to oversupply.

More layers increase bit density requiring smaller dies reducing latency, power and increase throughput. But there are additional architectural differences and so layer numbers cannot be compared across architectural differences such as Micron's 3D NAND CuA technology vs the BiCS architecture WD/Toshiba uses. But within the same architecture, more layers that can be fabricated, the better.

The number of layers are not related to the cell levels TLC, QLC, etc.

Thanks. Guess I'll wait maybe into the Nov time frame. Don't really need a new one. But the SATA III is feeling slow. Time to upgrade to the M2 onboard finally.
