I bought several hundred dollars worth of Marriott gift cards back during the Covid crisis when the hotels were all desperate. Two times I stayed at a Marriott brand hotel and two times they refused to accept them. You have to present them when you check out. And at that point when they refuse, there's nothing you can do except get angry. These people that work the desks at all of their branded hotels don't have a clue. I unloaded the cards on gift card granny. Will never stay at Marriott again.
I once had a bill of like $20 for parking and gave a $200 gift card as payment and they checked me out. 9 months later I tried using the balance at another hotel and the GiveX system kept saying $0 balance and so I asked them to print out the transaction history. Lo and behold, the last hotel I used (and this was a St Regis in Houston) had completely wiped out the card and claimed the full $200. I was livid. Called them back and asked them to fix the same asap. They fixed it the next day and I ended up paying via CC for something I already had a GC. As usually apparently the person who did this there, no longer worked at that hotel.
Thus, anybody buying GCs always remember to register them on Marriott so that you can see the balance as well as Transactions
Hotels and hotel employees can be a shady group of mofo's I can attest to this as I used to work for one.

Doesn't work that way. You can't use points to "upgrade" that free night that comes with Bonvoy credit card.

The only good thing left with Bonvoy is when you book for 4 nights with points, you get the 5th night free. But that's only if you have banked a lot of points.
I just did it last week. Added 4k points to a 50k free night for a stay at a 54k point property.

Ever since Marriott bought Starwood and renamed their program Bonvoy, the rewards have been utter crap. You can't even stay anywhere with their free 35k night (from having their CC) as what used to be available are now showing up at 37k points or more. Ridiculous!

2k or 4k points will get most people nowhere.
I just stayed at a Courtyard inside the Washington DC beltway for 11,000 points.

Here to share my Marriotts Bonvoy horror story. Stayed in the Moxy in South Beach in December and checked out a day early. Before checking out I confirmed like 10x with the front desk of the hotel that points redeemed for my final night would be refunded. I still have not gotten that 37,500 point refund to my Bonvoy account.

I have called about 3x now. About once every 2-3 months. Each time I go through the explanation and give an incident number, each time its escalated to a higher department, and each time I hear nothing back.. forget about it for a few months.. and then remember to call and ask where are my damn points at???

That's before I get to the point where they have devalued the sh*t outta the program that used to be Starwood. I left Marriott for Starwood like 15 years ago.. damn if they didn't force their way back by merging the company. Hilton isn't much better. IHG and Hyatt are my only remaining hope as these hotels continue to merge like the airlines.. and every time they do the program gets devalued AGAIN.

Does a single night count as an "eligible stay" -- if so this might be easy to use for corp trips to NYC/SD/LAX/MPK where there are like 10 Marriott properties within a 5-7 mile radius.

Responding to my own question. Just got off the call with Marriott customer service -- a "stay" is any separate reservation at different eligible properties. No minimum nights, 1 night is fine. Separate reservations at the same property for consecutive nights otoh will count as 1 stay. So gotta switch properties every day.
Totally gonna do 6 separate bookings for my corp trip EOM Big Grin 20k free points.
