Read reviews! Pic with one 20mo child's arm burnt from battery acid. I guess they are not water tight. Other complaints of leakage. Protect your kids!
Sounds like they complained of the sensors getting hot, not "battery acid".
I do sometimes wonder how water tight it is, but figure it would just stop working, not be a hazard. Can't imagine why the sensors would get hot, but I guess something to look out for. Usually just to sense the water, not something you need to touch. I've definitely touched them to get it singing outside of the bath and never noticed the sensors being hot.
received this as a gift a year or two ago and still working after 3 or 4 battery changes. If they had the blue or pink one on the same sale, I would buy another.

There is another pic of the battery cover that has a crack in it that is all dark brown at the crack. You could be correct about the sensors, but whatever the issue, not worth the risk to the little ones!
My daughter loves the pink one for over a year now, but I don't let it leave the bath... No problems yet.
one more thing, I'm only guessing how sensor works, but it may send positive current out one metal pron and have negative on other prong close together and when the water touches both it can jump between and turn on cause the circuit is made... too much resistance in the prongs and I guess they would get hot, so maybe depend on what you complete the circuit with.
one more thing... dc current from double a battery probably can't hurt a person..
one more thing... why the hell is this type of sensor not on my car windshield and could turn on windshield wipers for me if water sits on it... automatic wipers...
one more thing... I like uncle from jackie chan adventures cartoon.

The one thing I like about it is that as a noisy toy, it only keeps making noise as long as the kid is willing to keep their fingers on the contacts.
