1. They are usually not the highest quality drives. You may get lucky, but manufacturers are not putting mission critical drives in these.
2. The drives are bound to run hotter in these plastic enclosures if you keep them plugged in to copy huge amounts of data, which can lead to failure.
3. I bought one of those USB 3.1 docks where you can just drop in a 3.5" drive, so now I just buy higher quality NAS drives that I can easily repurpose for other things if needed. Also storing 3.5" hard drives without the plastic enclosures is a lot more space efficient.
2.5" portable drives are a different story as they are USB powered and just a lot more convenient than 3.5" backup drives. They are also small enough where size is never an issue.

If you don't already have a dock, something like this (or equivalent) would be a good investment. No need to buy more drives in plastic cases.
