I saw one yesterday at full price at local store but it looked like a newer model than the OP's pic

Seagate makes SMR drives up to 8TB. People have found SMR drives in these before. As always, YMMV, maybe you'll get lucky.

Good price, but I stopped buying these backup drives due to the following reasons:

1. They are usually not the highest quality drives. You may get lucky, but manufacturers are not putting mission critical drives in these.
2. The drives are bound to run hotter in these plastic enclosures if you keep them plugged in to copy huge amounts of data, which can lead to failure.
3. I bought one of those USB 3.1 docks where you can just drop in a 3.5" drive, so now I just buy higher quality NAS drives that I can easily repurpose for other things if needed. Also storing 3.5" hard drives without the plastic enclosures is a lot more space efficient.

2.5" portable drives are a different story as they are USB powered and just a lot more convenient than 3.5" backup drives. They are also small enough where size is never an issue.

Yeah, unlikely this is a CMR drive. I'd spend a bit more and get a CMR NAS drive if your data is important. If you already have a USB 3.5" hard drive dock, you can get an 8TB CMR WD Blue for $120. Worth the extra $50 for peace of mind, imho.

If you don't already have a dock, something like this (or equivalent) would be a good investment. No need to buy more drives in plastic cases.

Don't get SMR drives for backup. You'll be writing lots of data and that kills them. My Seagate SMR USB drive died because of this.
