The same combo in a 2-piece rod has also seen a price drop, to $86.03. Other 4000 Combos at discount also, but not the Medium-light 2-piece combo, which I want.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/PENN-7.../823453575

I need the 2-piece (apartment life).

Better combos to be had for less. This is a rollback not a sale.

Is this a good all around general rod for someone who's not a big fishing connoisseur but wants something more refined than the cheapest options?

It's a good rod for a general fisherman that will perform as expected or better (to the general / not big fishing connoisseur). This thing to watch is the size and power of the rod and reel, depending on what you are fishing for. IE...If you are fishing for trout/bass in the streams < 20"....the 4000 reel may be a little big and you may seek a 3000 size. For $25 -$30 more, this is a much better option and goes on sale from this price point frequently. That Battle is a proven reel that you can pair with any general and connoisseur rod.

Thank you. Are these options good for freshwater fishing or more tailored towards saltwater?

I'd say the PENN Pursuit IV is good, I caught one on sale of 20% off ($63.99) at academy once, you can still get ones for $79.99.

They can do both, but are slightly tailored toward saltwater. I'd say the Pursuit 4 is a better choice for novices since it's cheap but durable,

There is a 3000 option as well,
I'd also say that if you're primarily going after freshwater, you could get something more sensitive like the Lew's American hero.

PENN products are for strength and durability for the sea, I'd recommend their products for Speckled trout, redfish, jacks, sand trout, flounder, pretty much any saltwater fish.

Great advice dude 👍. Pursuits are excellent reels at a great price.
